Fans of Animal Crossing: New Horizons feel frustrated after the Nintendo Switch best-seller failed to receive mention during Nintendo’s E3 2021 press event. Barring Animal Crossing faithful, the publisher’s presentation featured something for everyone, including reveals of long-awaited titles and updates about game’s the public hasn’t seen in a while.

One of the biggest pieces of news revolved around the announcement of Metroid Dread, a new 2D Metroid entry scheduled to launch this fall on October 8 for the Nintendo Switch. A trailer for Breath of the Wild 2 wowed viewers as well, leaving fans even more eager to get their hands on the sequel. The Direct also unleashed a first look at the all-new Wario game, WarioWare: Get It Together, which will see characters from past Wario-starring adventures return for another batch of mini-games. Plus, Mario Golf players can look forward to Super Rush’s release later this month, according to footage shown during the recent Nintendo Direct. As noted above, however, one group of Switch users feel left out of the festivities.

Due to an ongoing drought with regards to major content updates, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players hoped the title would appear in some capacity during Nintendo’s E3 presser. Fans especially crossed their fingers for news about the long-awaited addition of Brewster, the quiet, coffee-loving pigeon who debuted in 2005’s Animal Crossing: Wild World. Brewster didn’t show up at E3, however, and ACNH in general was conspicuously absent. Thus, fans have taken to Reddit to vent their frustrations, creating and sharing funny memes to mask the immense disappointment they feel at Nintendo’s perceived neglect.

The disappointment isn’t unfounded; again, the wait for another major update has gone on for quite some time. However, some of the frustration stems from a misunderstanding about Nintendo reportedly promising to support the game for three years. This claim is attributed to an interview CNET conducted with Director Aya Kyogoku in March 2020, wherein she said the team “want[s] to make sure that in two years or three years down the road, players will still continue to find new surprises in the game. So we hope to create an update that you can do that with.”

There exists no promise of three years of support in her statement, nor is there an assurance that updates will continue for years post-launch. One interpretation of Kyogoku’s comment suggests that ACNH developers will add so much content across various updates that players will need two to three years to uncover all of the “surprises.” In this day and age, though, all of the surprises have been found, leaving players hungry for something more, something new. It would seem, then, that Nintendo should either set expectations or readjust its idea of long-term support.
