Animal Crossing‘s Tom Nook is an overall nice raccoon, but he certainly plays favorites when it comes to villagers. Just like the players of Animal Crossing, Tom Nook wants to create a community founded on friendship and trust between the people and animals who live beside each other. However, some villagers get in the way of this goal, earning them a place on his bad side.

Tom Nook’s backstory in the Animal Crossing series has always been marked by his drive and grounded goals. As an ambitious businessperson, he wants his realtor and retail businesses to expand constantly. Indeed, by the time of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Nook Inc. has grown to the point that it has become difficult to know who is even on Tom Nook’s payroll anymore. The raccoon has reached high status, but he still hopes to grow his businesses by investing in more shops and creating more communities.

However, some villagers are significant obstacles in Tom Nook’s path. Between those who are hard to get along with and others who downright undermine Tom Nook with Animal Crossing exploits, some villagers can make or break a Nook Inc. project by simply being near it. As patient as Tom Nook is with loans in the Animal Crossing series, some villagers must drive him mad to the point of loathing. Whether it is because they make his life hard or they stand against his values, here are the villagers that Tom Nook probably hates the most.

Bob Is The Antithesis Of Tom Nook In Animal Crossing

Bob is to Tom Nook as air is to ground: the two do not necessarily clash, but they are polar opposites. Bob is the first Animal Crossing villager ever designed and has become the mascot for lazy villagers. His squinting eyes and cheeky grin exude chillness. Tom Nook could not be further from such a character. As the CEO of Nook Inc. and an investor in Timmy and Tommy’s stores and the Able Sisters, Tom Nook is an incredibly busy person who values drive and ambition. Though Tom Nook sells the idea of an island paradise in AnimalCrossing: New Horizons, seeing the cat who made being lazy popular in the Animal Crossing series lounging about must get annoying.

Even when Bob appears to be motivated to do something, his interests are so dreamy and pointless that they must drive Tom Nook’s groundedness mad. Bob’s special skill is shadow puppetry and his wish is to be a detective. Seeing that Bob has no actual fingers to perform shadow puppetry and that there is no true crime in the Animal Crossing world, both of these activities have no basis in the games. Either the pointlessness of Bob’s hobbies grind the raccoon’s gears, or perhaps he is worried Bob may eventually use his detective skills to uncover Tom Nook’s villainous business practices in Animal Crossing.

Additionally, Bob can sometimes just be straight-up gross. His catchphrase “pthhpth” apparently mimics the sound of a cat coughing up a furball, meaning every time he says it, he is almost vomiting. Indeed, Bob’s e-Reader card even shares that the cat spits when he talks. The nastiness must put off potential visitors considering if they want to move to Tom Nook’s new neighborhood, infuriating the raccoon in the process. Tom Nook must be wondering why Bob has always been one of Animal Crossing‘s favorite villagers.

Animal Crossing’s Wart Jr. Stands Against All Of Tom Nook’s Values

Wart Jr. has haunted Tom Nook since the original Animal Crossing game alongside Bob. As a cranky villager, Wart Jr. is one of the worst villagers for peaceful living in Animal Crossing. He is generally rude to those who do not immediately agree with him or fail to complete the favors he expects from others. Even worse, in earlier titles of the Animal Crossing series, Wart Jr. loved to spread rumors about other villagers, especially the peppy ones that distracted him from the educational hobbies he loves dearly. Well, he may love being smarter than others more than the actual process of learning itself, as he also used to challenge players to contests of wits whenever he could, hoping to humiliate those who dare cross his path. As a realtor hoping to build a community, Tom Nook must view Wart Jr. as an obstacle to his success.

Perhaps more infuriating to Tom Nook is Wart Jr.’s suggested background. Based on his traditional yet cute house in Animal Crossing: New Horizons as well the smug grin he wears on his face, Wart Jr. must come from a family with a long history of wealth and high status. After all, Wart Jr. proudly carries the family name, hence his junior title. Tom Nook has always been one to praise initiative and self-made people. It’s why Tom Nook’s relationship with Timmy and Tommy is so strong: The two boys needed a home and were willing to work hard to boost the Nook name. Seeing Wart Jr. enjoy generational wealth by judging others for being less educated and privileged stands against everything Tom Nook believes.

Stinky Must Be On Tom Nook’s Bad Side

Some Animal Crossing villagers are worse than others, and this is unfortunately the case for Stinky the cat. Stinky is as his name suggests: stinky. That he wears a wrestling mask resembling underwear on his head is beside the point, although such a fact becomes alarming when considering if it is the underwear on his head that stinks rather than something else on his person. Tom Nook is a raccoon out to make a profit. He sells items in his stores, houses to homebuyers, and the idea of a community to villagers at large. Such tasks become exponentially more difficult when a villager is constantly reeking of an ambiguous stench and deterring customers at every turn.

As one of Animal Crossing‘s jock personality villagers, Stinky’s name obviously comes from the fact that he is sweaty from working out all of the time. His Japanese name is actually a mixture of both “stinky” and “sweaty.” This type of dedication to fitness – which has consequences for everyone but Stinky – makes him an obvious pest to Tom Nook. Though the business-focused raccoon has his greedy side, he is certainly accommodating to those he cares about: Tom Nook’s history with the Able Sisters shows how supportive he can be. Stinky’s selfishness to not cleanse himself must put Tom Nook off.

Jacob Brings The Property Value Down In New Horizons

Jacob has not always been on Tom Nook’s bad side, but recent iterations in the Animal Crossing series have seen him become one of the raccoon’s worst nightmares. In the original Animal Crossing game, Jacob’s house was a simple, nice room with ivy wallpaper. However, when the colorful bird returned in New Horizons‘ predecessor Animal Crossing: New Leaf, his house was a tattered mess, looking as if it had been trashed and abandoned for many years. Things have only gotten worse in New Horizons with Jacob’s house now being a literal dump.

Every town needs a location to get rid of its trash, but to make this location a house isn’t great. Though Reddit user justsamantics loves Jacob’s trash-ridden home, Tom Nook must be fuming over the bird’s strange life choices. Jacob’s hobby interest is nature, so it is strange to see the bird who once had ivy growing in his home create an environment that actively damages natural environments.

At the end of the day, Tom Nook is probably patient with all of the villagers who choose to live in his communities. Even if the debut of Tom Nook was SmashBros., not Animal Crossing, the raccoon is a lover and not a fighter. After all, the villagers who move into Tom Nook’s homes chose to trust the raccoon and his business, which is all he can really ask for. Though Animal Crossing‘s worst villagers may deserve the hate they get, the kind Tom Nook will always be willing to find them a house with interest-free loan payments.
