Bill Murray says he’s playing a villain in Ant-Man 3. Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly return to head up the third MCU movie featuring shrinking superheroes Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Plot details about Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (as it’s officially known) are of course shrouded in the same impenetrable veil of secrecy that surrounds everything MCU-related. But at least one interesting piece of information about the movie did leak out when Murray recently let it slip that he’s been cast to appear. No confirmation has yet come from Marvel as to Murray’s casting and when asked about the matter Rudd himself was entirely evasive.

It’s hard to imagine that Murray would make up a fake casting rumor about himself so there’s no reason to doubt that he really is in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. At any rate Murray is continuing to say he’s in the movie, and during a recent appearance he even let slip another possible detail about his character, saying on The Eli Manning Show that his superpower in the film is that he’s a “bad guy.” Whether this represents a true revelation or is just a case of Murray clowning around of course can’t be stated with any certainty.

If Murray is indeed playing a villain in Ant-Man 3, then Kevin Feige and company deserve a pat on the back, as it would certainly represent a major coup for them to convince the notoriously eccentric actor to take on such a role in an MCU movie. Murray of course is known for playing good guys in movies like Ghostbusters and its recent legacy sequel Ghostbusters: Afterlife, though even when he plays a protagonist his wise-guy attitude tends to steer things more toward the sarcastically jerky and even anti-heroic. The sleazy Ernie McCracken in Kingpin arguably stands as the most memorable of all Murray’s flat-out villain roles, though there’s also Frank Milo in Mad Dog and Glory and Carson Welch in Aloha.

What specific villain Murray might be playing in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is obviously a matter of pure speculation. Of course Kang the Conqueror, a frequent Marvel bad guy, is already known to be in the movie with Jonathan Majors reprising his Loki role. Murray’s character presumably would be a secondary villain, possibly associated in some way with Michael Douglas’ Hank Pym. No matter who Murray is playing, there’s no question his particular comic sensibilities mesh well with the generally irreverent humor featured in the Ant-Man movies. And it would certainly be fun to see Murray and Rudd reunited after they both appeared in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Hopefully there will soon be some actual confirmations about Ant-Man 3 and even a trailer.
