New set images reveal Paul Rudd’s return as Scott Lang to the MCU in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Director Peyton Reed wraps up his Marvel Studios sub-franchise with the upcoming threequel set to release in 2023. With that, production is in full swing, and some photos made their way online giving fans their first look at Rudd’s titular character.

Ant-Man played an important role in the defeat of Thanos (Josh Brolin) in Avengers: Endgame despite sitting out Avengers: Infinity War due to his involvement in Captain America: Civil War. After getting trapped in the Quantum Realm for five years in real-time, he reached out to the surviving Avengers and suggested the idea of the time heist. The idea sounded ridiculous at first, and it took some convincing for all the heroes to join, but they eventually did. Luckily things worked out well, with Lang, like the rest of the universe, reuniting with his loved ones. Now, however, he’s up for a brand new mission with Evangeline Lilly’s Hope van Dyne/Wasp as they delve deeper into the mysteries of the Quantum Realm in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Production for the upcoming threequel has been going on for a while now, but this is the first time that images from the set popped up online. Plot specifics for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania have been kept tightly under wraps. That being said, several official details have been announced thus far, aside from the threequel’s principal cast, Lang’s daughter Cassie, is also set to return but with a new actress. Instead of Emma Fuhrmann, who played the character in Avengers: Endgame, Katherine Newton takes over as she presumably takes on a bigger role in the film. In the comics, Cassie becomes her own superhero named Stature who’s a prominent member of the Young Avengers. Meanwhile, Jonathan Majors’ Kang the Conqueror will be the story’s main bad guy, who’s also a variant of Loki‘s He Who Remains. It’s safe to assume that Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania‘s primary narrative will mostly be about the Quantum Realm and its dangers, but seeing Rudd in his casual clothes means that the blockbuster will also feature grounded elements which are needed for balanced storytelling.

No marketing materials have yet to be released for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Since Marvel Studios has a string of other projects scheduled to come out this year, chances are that there won’t be any clear push to promote the film in the next several months. That being said, what goes down in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which deals with the multiverse, could ultimately have a ripple effect on what Lang and Van Dyne deal with in their upcoming movie.
