A new clip from upcoming supernatural horror Antlers shows a brutal monster attack in a forest. Antlers will mark director Scott Cooper’s first foray into horror in what’s been a relatively short career for the actor-turned-director. Cooper’s first film, Crazy Heart, was a critical success, earning numerous accolades at award season, including two Academy Awards for lead actor Jeff Bridges. Joining Scott for Antlers is frequent horror pundit Guillermo del Toro, who will help produce the movie, alongside frequent collaborator J Miles Davis and Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy writer David S. Goyer.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Antlers stars Keri Russell as Julia, alongside Jesse Plemons as her sheriff brother Paul, as they become concerned with a young boy secretly harboring a supernatural monster in his house. Lucas, the creature-befriending boy in Antlers, will be Jeremy T. Thomas’ first major film role after a run of small parts in his brief career. The film, which is adapted from a short story by writer Nick Antosca, looks to draw on the mythological beast the Wendigo for inspiration. The Wendigo is part of a Native American folklore tale of a cannibalistic horror that preys on humans, invoking insatiable greed and the desire to kill in those it chooses as victims.

In the latest clip, the Antlers monster can be seen in action, as Lucas confronts a bully in the woods. As the bully proceeds to ridicule Lucas, a rustling noise distracts the pair, and Lucas turns to face the monster lurking in the trees. Unfortunately for Lucas’ bully, the monster proceeds to brutally attack him while Lucas runs off into the forest. The full clip from Searchlight Pictures can be seen below:

The clip follows two previous trailers that have only hinted at the creature’s monstrous power. While it looks like there will be plenty of human devouring in the film, previous Antlers trailers have relied on the eerie folklore surrounding the film’s version of a Wendigo to hone in the scares. But while this is, clearly, an all-out horror movie, there’s a human element to Antlers. The film will also explore Lucas’ family troubles, a tale of drug addiction in small-town America, and those it leaves behind.

Early reviews for the film have been mostly positive, with his outing into horror seemingly a success, something Cooper has said wouldn’t have been possible if del Toro wasn’t involved in Antlers. With three Academy Award wins and a Golden Globe for dark fantasy The Shape of Water under his belt, del Toro has proven he’s a master of strange fiction and the perfect partner for a film such as Antlers. Following several Covid-related delays, Antlers is now due to release next week on October 29th, just in time for Halloween.
