Released in 2019 by developer Respawn Entertainment, Apex Legends recently entered its 10th season with the release of the new character Seer. While it may not be one of the best FPS games ever, there are still plenty of fans who’ve stuck around since day one, and many more who are returning to Apex once again for another taste of the first-person, squad-based, battle royale shooter.

One complaint that has continued to haunt Apex is the prevalence of third-party scenarios. Perhaps this is what has kept it from being one of the best games available in Steam’s EA Play. Given the time-to-kill of most engagements in Apex, the size of the maps, and numerous Passive, Tactical, and Ultimate abilities for hasty ambushes, it’s all too common for a third squad to spoil the party. As such, the best Legends for surviving these situations will be ones who can provide space, time, and information for their squad.

10 Mirage

This holographic trickster uses deceptive mind games to catch his enemies off guard. The youngest of four boys, Elliott Witt developed a habit of goofing around to get attention. Despiting his brothers going missing in action during the Frontier War, his mother gave him illusion-creating Holo-Pilot technology and told him to follow his dreams of becoming an Apex Champion.

Providing a nice mixture of survivability and scouting, this Legend is arguably the second-best medic after Lifeline and a capable defender of third-parties. His Tactical can trick enemy squads into revealing their positions to each other first, while his squad lies in wait. His Ultimate can give his squad a chance to quickly retreat, heal up, and re-enter the fight as the numerous decoys clog up the battle.

9 Pathfinder

This forward scout outmaneuvers his opponents to get the better of them. A Mobile Robotic Versatile eNtity, or “MRVN,” he was abandoned by his creator in a warehouse decades ago. With little memory surrounding his creation and identity, he joined the Apex Games to gain a large enough following to capture the attention of his creator, wherever they may be.

When a third-party happens, a quick escape to heal and reload is often the best remedy. While he may have been outclassed in this regard by other Legends, he’s still a great character to have in a squad. His Tactical can help him hastily reposition at moment’s notice and his Ultimate can help his whole squad make a quick getaway.

This professional soldier gets in and out of a fight like few others. With four older brothers and parents who all served in the IMC military, Anita Williams was born for combat service. After losing a brother in the line of duty, she decided to fight in the Apex Games to raise enough money to get back to her distant homeworld.

Combining speed, smoke cover, and area-of-effect damage, this Legend can be an incredibly elusive one in a fight. Her Tactical can be shot at enemies to block their vision and help provide extra cover for teammates. Her Ultimate can (and should) be quickly deployed at an incoming third-party to slow their oncoming ambush.

7 Caustic

This toxic trapper uses noxious concoctions to keep foes at bay. As a brilliant scientist, Alexander Nox worked for a laboratory that developed pesticides. Deciding his creations needed to be tested on living subjects, he burned the lab to the ground after a conflict with his employer. His desire to compete in the Apex Games has little to do with championships, and much to do with hypotheses and observations.

In any Apex gunfight, but especially when third-parties happen, there’s nothing more valuable than time: Time to loot death boxes, time to pop a Pheonix, time to let that L-Star cool down, etc. Caustic is arguably the best Legend for slowing down enemies and creating a nook of safe space for squadmates. Unfortunately, as deadly as he is in close quarters, he’s relatively useless in open areas.

6 Octane

This high-speed daredevil uses blistering momentum to run circles around the opposition. As the privileged son of wealthy CEO, Octavio Silva would defy boredom by defying death.

Any Legend that can get themselves and their teammates out of a fight quickly is handy to have in third-party scenarios, and quickness is Octane’s specialty. His Ultimate has a quick cooldown, is quick to deploy, and can be used multiple times by teammates to bounce in and out of engagements. It can also be thrown at downed teammates, giving them a chance to fly back to safety for a revive.

5 Wraith

This interdimensional skirmisher warps the properties of space and time to her advantage. As a volunteer for her own science experiment, Renee Blasey was betrayed and imprisoned by her former partner. Terrified and with no memory of herself, she was guided by her own voice from another dimension to be brave and escape. Now, she follows that voice into the Apex Games to learn more about her identity.

While her Passive isn’t completely consistent, it can sometimes let her squad know that there’s a second squad closing in for an ambush before they ever fire a shot. Her Tactical can get herself out of “bad” fights quickly and can be combined with her Ultimate to give her squadmates a chance to quickly retreat and sortie multiple times in a battle. Using her Ultimate for safe revives is one of the crucial tips for advanced Apex players.

4 Gibraltar

This shielded fortress is a tank that’s willing to get hit in order to give a hit. As the son of two search and rescue volunteers, Makoa Gibraltar inherited their passion for helping and protecting others. While the people he cares about may fight for fame or glory, he fights to bring his friends home in one piece.

Gibby is great for winning “trades” in gunfights with his Passive, giving his team the crucial first knockdown in a gunfight. His Tactical can be combined with his Ultimate to give his squad a mobile base of defense to heal, revive, or loot death boxes, as the case may be. While his shield might not be as versatile as the one in Warzone, which can be used in a number of ways, it can still be the difference between victory and defeat during third-parties.

3 Valkyrie

This winged avenger commands the skies, and her commands involve raining missiles. The willful and determined Kairi Imahara is the daughter of a skilled fighter pilot. She flies with wings made from her father’s Titan to honor his memory.

This “Season 9” Legend combines maneuverability, area denial, scouting, and relocation abilities like no other, and arguably makes earlier Legends that perform similar roles redundant. Her jetpack allows her to get out of bad spots and climb to high ground faster than any other class, and her Tactical can delay and disorganize the advances of a third-party. Her Ultimate is an incredible panic button for getting a whole squad way, way out of a fight, or merely repositioning while scanning the whole battlefield for enemies.

2 Crypto

This surveillance expert finds his opponents long before they find him. As a brilliant computer engineer working for the Mercenary Syndicate, Tae Joon Park discovered an algorithm that would accurately predict the winner of the Apex Games. Before he could expose the secret that he’d discovered, he was framed for murder. Now he fights to clear his name, hiding in plain sight among his fellow combatants.

One of the best ways to counter third-partying is to know how many squads are around before deciding to open fire. Crypto’s drone can look at Champion signs around the map to see the number of enemy squads within 200 meters, and in some situations can be set up as a nice security camera to watch his squad’s back. His capacity to grab his teammate’s banners from great distances with his drone is invaluable, especially if he has a Mobile Respawn Beacon in hand.

1 Seer

This ambush artist couldn’t decide which wallhack he liked most, so he chose all of them. As a child of prophecy, Obi Edolasim was foretold to bring misery to the world. While some saw him as the embodiment of a terrible curse, more grew to see him as a champion of the forgotten, different, and unseen.

Despite the nerf that came shortly after his release, this Legend is still mired in controversy. His Passive ability pairs very nicely with his Tactical ability, which often discourages enemies from being aggressive for the eight seconds that they’ll be revealed. His Passive will also cause his field-of-view on the mini-map to glow yellow if there’s an enemy within range, allowing the player to do a quick 360 while ADSing to detect any nearby enemies.
