In the world of Apex Legends, there is a lot of additional weapon skins, banners, and character quips to unlock and buy while playing. Players will earn these cosmetic upgrades from leveling up their battlepass and opening up Apex Packs. Luckily for everyone involved, these cosmetics don’t give players any kind of in-game advantage. Instead, they are a way of showing off status within the game, as typically those with the more impressive skins have spent more time playing Apex Legends.

Most players would assume that Legendary cosmetics are the rarest type and therefore the most difficult to unlock. This would seem to make sense as players have a less than 7% chance of earning Legendary gear from an Apex Pack. Many have no idea that there is another tier to these upgrades: Heirloom items. With a less than 1% chance of appearing it is very likely that most players have never seen one in-game, and even less own one of these highly coveted items. This guide will explain exactly what these items are and how to obtain them in Apex Legends.

Apex Legends: Apex Pack Odds

In order to understand how to obtain Heirlooms, players will need to understand the unlock odds of packs and Apex’s bad luck protection system. With every single pack, players will get at least one rare or better item. The chance of this happening for one item is %100. The chances for a piece of Epic gear is about 25%, whereas the Legendary gear is less than 7%, and finally Heirloom pieces hover around 1%.

The upside to Apex Legends is that there is a system in place to ensure that players aren’t victims of bad luck and statistics. Even if the percentage of receiving a cosmetic is low, after a certain amount of packs are unlocked players will be guaranteed a certain type of item. This specifically applies to Legendary and Heirloom gear, but the amount of packs players will need to unlock is wildly different. Players will need to unlock 30 packs to guarantee a Legendary, whereas 500 will need to open in order to ensure an Heirloom.

Apex Legends: How to Unlock Heirloom Items

Unlock other types of items, Apex Packs are the only way to unlock Heirlooms. Players will not unlock these items from leveling up, completing the battlepass, or be able to craft them using Metals. Ultimately this means that players will just need to hope that they get lucky will opening up packs. Since players can only earn 45 Apex Packs a season, those who want to earn Heirlooms quickly will need to spend some money on the game.

Each Apex Pack will cost players 100 Apex Coins. Those coins themselves can be bought in a pack of 1,000 for $10. With some quick math, that means that every Apex Pack is worth $1. Those who want to be guaranteed an Heirloom piece then will need to spend at the least $455 to earn their Heirloom set. Its either that or be extremely lucky and patient.

At this time the only character who has an Heirloom set is Wraith, and players will know for sure when they have gotten lucky enough to earn it. The Apex Pack will flash red just before it opens to reveal the new Heirloom set. Players will receive a unique banner, knife skin, and intro quip. While this is currently the only set, it stands to reason that Apex Legends will be adding other sets in the near future.
