A new cinematic trailer has revealed Valkyrie, the newest addition to Apex Legends‘ playable roster of heroes. Apex Legends, which launched in 2019, is a free-to-play battle royale shooter from Respawn Entertainment. The title shares a setting with Respawn’s Titanfall franchise and has received frequent updates since its release.

As Apex Legends‘ eighth season nears its end, Respawn has rolled out a brand new War Games event to bring players back before the transition into a new season. War Games, which began on April 13, adds five new modes to the game which each focus on a unique original mechanic. These changes to the typical Apex Legends formula range from mundane to drastic, but all of them have a noticeable effect on gameplay. Respawn’s willingness to upset the game’s typical balance is apparently working to keep players interested, as recently the battle royale shooter officially reached 1oo million global players. This landmark achievement serves as a testament to Apex Legends‘ popularity, and Respawn’s ability to keep their fanbase interested.

A brand new cinematic trailer posted to Apex Legends‘ YouTube channel, titled “Northstar,” reveals the game’s newest playable Legend. The new hero, codenamed Valkyrie, has a strong connection to Respawn’s Titanfall franchise due to her father’s past as a Northstar Titan pilot and rivalry with Titanfall 2 antagonist Kuben Blisk (he’s the Apex Predator known as Viper in the game’s campaign). The cinematic trailer depicts Valkyrie confronting Blisk and deciding what legacy she will forge for herself. The Legend’s status as a skilled Titan pilot suggests that the iconic mechs may finally be coming to Apex Legends, with the trailer suggesting a release date of May 4.

While Valkyrie is being set up as the newest addition to Apex Legends‘ roster, dataminers have discovered another new character that is expected to arrive in the near future. A Twitter user managed to find information on the upcoming Legend, referred to as Pariah, within the game’s files. Pariah’s abilities, full skill set and collection of skins were all found and posted online, but no official information has been released. After the release of Valkyrie’s “Northstar” trailer it seems that Pariah will instead be arriving at some point in the future.

Apex Legends continues to expand and innovate, drawing in new players while maintaining an already-loyal fanbase. With the end of Season 8 approaching, Valkyrie and the “Northstar” trailer are a great way to set up the game’s future. While nothing is known about Valkyrie’s actual in-game skills and abilities, it seems very likely that players will finally be seeing a Titan mech enter the Apex Legends arena.

Apex Legends is available now on PS4, Xbox One, PC and Nintendo Switch
