When Apex Legends released in 2019, it had six characters that players could choose from. Now, in 2021, it has added 16 total characters. Each character has passive, tactical, and ultimate abilities. Knowing when and how to use these abilities can make playing some characters a daunting prospect. Veterans to the game will be familiar with many of the characters and what they do. Even if they have not played a character before, they still have an advantage when it comes to items and weapons.

These things can be a lot of pressure for new players and those returning to the game after an extended period. It’s advantageous to pick a character that is easy to play, so the player has more time to figure out the map, weapons, armor, etc.

The Best Characters for New Players in Apex Legends

It may not be much of a surprise, but most of the characters the game launched with are still good for new players. After all, at one point in time, everyone was new to the game. Some are a little harder to use than others, so here are the ones that a new player should start with to become familiar with the game. These characters are all unlocked from the start, so they do not need to be purchased with either in-game currency or real money.

  • Pathfinder. Pathfinder is a great character whether the player is new to the game or not. First, he is a robot, which instantly makes him cooler than all the other meatsack characters. His abilities work well for beginners or skilled players. His tactical ability is the Grappling Hook. It may take a bit of practice to become skilled in using the grappling hook effectively, but beginners can still use it for traversal purposes. Pathfinder has the Insider Knowledge passive ability, which allows him to scan a survey beacon to reduce the cooldown of his ultimate ability and show where the next ring will be. His ultimate ability is the Zipline Gun, which creates a zipline between the player’s location and the target. Any player can use this, though this includes enemies too. Used well, Pathfinder is a great support character.
  • Lifeline. Lifeline is the medic. Those new to the game who aren’t great at killing other players can still contribute by healing teammates. Her tactical ability is the D.O.C. Heal Drone, which heals players. Its weakness is that it can’t move. She also has Combat Revive as a passive ability, which deploys the D.O.C. to revive teammates and generates a shield to protect them. Her ultimate ability is Care Package, which calls a drop pod with some decent gear. With this, even an unskilled player can still help teammates immensely.
  • Bloodhound. Bloodhound is a tracker character and has abilities that are easy to use and work well with most team compositions. Their passive ability is called Tracker, and it allows the player to see clues left behind by enemies, such as footprints or blood. The tactical ability is Eye of the Allfather, which reveals enemies, traps, and other clues. It tells how many enemies are detected. Be aware that enemies will be alerted to Bloodhounds scans though. The ultimate ability is Beast of the Hunt, which increases Bloodhound’s move speed and turns their vision black and white, except for enemies and enemy footprints highlighted in red, and teammates highlighted in blue. Pinging enemies and clues is easy, making Bloodhound great at supporting the team even if the player is not familiar with Apex Legends’ intricacies.

Apex Legends is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
