Battle royale Apex Legends is finally letting players who like to play solo to take on enemy squads in Duos and Trios on their own with a long-requested no-fill option. Season 8 of EA and Respawn’s Titanfall spinoff began in early February, introducing new Legend Fuse, Obliterated Kings Canyon, 30-30 Repeater lever-action rifle, skins, and a new battle pass for players to level.

Season 8 of Apex Legends was also previously rumored to launch alongside the game’s release on the Nintendo Switch. But developer Respawn Entertainment eventually confirmed the game’s availability on the Switch to be set for March 9, 2021. Since the game’s Switch release comes more than a month after the start of Season 8, players on the platform will instantly get 30 free battle pass levels to make it easier for them to catch up to players on other platforms.

Respawn Entertainment announced that a “No-Fill” queue option will finally be added to Apex Legends alongside its release on the Switch on March 9, as well as the launch of the new Chaos Theory Collection Event. According to the developer, a new checkbox titled “Fill Teammates” will be added to the Apex Legend’s game mode selection screen. Much as it works in Fortnite and other battle royale games, if players leave the box checked, then the game will attempt to fill up their squad like normal. However, leaving the box unchecked will send the current party into matchmaking without filling up all the team’s slots, allowing solo players to face against teams of two and three in Duos and Trios.

That doesn’t mean that these team modes will turn into Solos lobbies, though, as the studio has set some limits to the feature. For now, only six no-fill players will be allowed into any match, and the feature will entirely be unavailable in ranked modes. Respawn also mentioned that while it still thinks the game is best played with a full squad, it does suggest certain situations wherein playing solo would be useful, such as completing specific daily or weekly challenges, exploring the map, and experimenting with new Legends that players might otherwise shy away from.

Being able to play solo against teams is something that many Apex Legends players have wanted since the game was released in 2019 and will certainly offer a new challenge for many players who want to really test out their skills in the game. It’s a feature that many battle royales have already proven are something that players are interested in, so this one likely shouldn’t be going anywhere anytime soon.

Apex Legends is available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and it will launch on Nintendo Switch on March 9, 2021.
