Huawei is now looking to challenge the Apple Watch dominance with the recently released Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro smartwatch. It’s an attractive and sporty watch from the tech giant, but can it really compete with the leading smartwatch manufacturer, Apple? Here’s a closer look at how the hardware and ecosystem of the two watches compare.

One of the benefits of an Apple Watch is how it handles the job so effortlessly. In Apple parlance, it just works. Apple branding means most developers design apps specifically for the Apple Watch and make sure they sync well with an iPhone. That equates to ease and reliability for the wearer. Apple has industry-leading technology across its product line, so there is little doubt that buying an Apple product will deliver solid performance and usability. The Apple Watch has established itself as a capable fitness tracker and single-handedly established the smartwatch as a health device, when it added the ECG feature.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Clearly the Apple Watch is the smartwatch to beat. Moving on to Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro, and while this is only the second generation of this model, Huawei has been making smartwatches since 2015. The company knows how to build a nice smartwatch. Make no mistake, the Watch GT 2 Pro is a high quality device and features a 14-day battery life, more on that below. It offers wireless charging and it has a premium build with titanium and sapphire glass, making it just as nicely built as an Apple Watch. It has plenty of fitness tracking features and will pair with any Android phone without trouble. However, some features are not compatible with an iPhone. For example, using iPhone photos as watch faces and using the GT 2 Pro as a remote shutter. Whether the Huawei GT 2 Pro will come to the US is still unknown, but if it does, the price is likely to be around $389. This also makes it comparable to the Apple Watch Series 5 with Wi-Fi, at $399. Note that Huawei’s watch relies on Bluetooth, as Wi-Fi is not included and cellular is not an option.

Is The 14-Day Battery Life Real?

Huawei Watch GT 2 Pro’s most amazing feature is the 14-day battery life. Of course, that depends on which battery draining features are used. Huawei notes that heart rate monitoring, sleep monitoring, GPS and Bluetooth usage can all reduce battery life to just 10 hours. The scenarios described in the footnotes of the product page don’t seem like excessive use. For example, 90 minutes of working out, 30 minutes of music, screen on 200 times and, the final case, 50 SMS messages, 6 calls and 3 alarms. Turning the screen on 200 times and sending 50 SMS messages are the only two situations that seem quite uncommon. Perhaps a 90-minute workout is not average, but many device owners could reach the other limits on a daily basis. Regardless, it is impressive that the battery can be stretched that far when needed.

The Huawei GT 2 Pro runs Lite OS and there are no third-party app choices. The included apps are full-featured, but many users might find the app experience in general to be limited. Huawei offers a blood oxygen saturation (SpO2) sensor and sleep tracking, and while Apple doesn’t have SpO2, it did add sleep tracking to watchOS 7. To sum up, Huawei’s GT 2 Pro is a fine smartwatch for Android phone owners. Apple iPhone owners should not bother looking any further than the Apple Watch. By virtue of price and compatibility alone, Apple wins for iPhone users. On the other hand, smartphones that run Android are not really compatible with the Apple Watch. This is how the lines have been drawn since the first Apple Watch was announced and isn’t expected to change soon. For now, the choice is clear. iPhone owners should default to an Apple Watch while Android owners can comparison shop between Huawei, Samsung, Garmin, Fitbit, and others.
