The Apple Watch is quite a powerful device for a wearable and one of the many cool features is the on-wrist access to photos and albums. It’s not hard to create a photo album for the smartwatch and remove photos, but how to do it may not be so obvious to new owners of an Apple Watch.

Apple’s smartwatches and smartphones are best used together. To set up an Apple Watch requires an iPhone. Even a cellular-capable model still needs an iPhone for various other features to work properly. Since photos and music files can be somewhat large compared to text-based information, Apple provides ways to limit how much syncs to the watch. For context, Apple’s Watch Series 6 has a maximum capacity of 32-gigabytes, compared to the iPhone which can contain up to 512-gigabytes.

With the paired iPhone, the Apple Watch photo album can be chosen. By default, the Favorites album is used, which is convenient. That means Favorites will transfer to the Watch. However, if a large number of photos are in Favorites, it will use a significant amount of space on the Apple Watch. There are two ways to handle the storage issue. The first way is to limit the number of photos transferred from the iPhone album and let Apple decide which photos to sync. An alternate method is to create a new album specifically for the smartwatch. That provides additional control of what gets transferred and it can also be limited by the number of photos.

Two Ways To Manage Photos

For most control, users can open the Photos app on the iPhone, select the photos to transfer, tap the Share icon, then tap Add to Album. This creates an album specifically for the Apple Watch. This album can be selected in the Apple Watch app, by tapping My Watch, then Photos, Selected Photo Album and tapping the album that was just created. To let Apple select photos from Favorites, the iPhone user can simply change the number of photos to sync with the Photos Limit setting on this same screen.

Whichever album organization is chosen, there may be times that the wearer wishes to remove a photo from the Apple Watch. This is done on the iPhone, by removing the photo from the synced album. The Apple Watch will quickly update to match the new album contents. Ideally, having enough room would not be a problem and initially this is true. Newer models have more room than an older Apple Watch, so it is less of a concern. However, as more apps are added and more app data is saved, less will remain for music and photos. Apple has a fairly painless way to manage this once the basic management options are understood.
