The first official image from Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom reveals Jason Momoa’s new, darker superhero costume. With Aquaman 2, Momoa steps into the role of Arthur Curry for the fourth time (BvS cameo included). The first Aquaman debuted in 2018 and plunged viewers straight into the underwater world of Atlantis. The plot details for its sequel are still being kept tightly under wraps, but Momoa had a hand in crafting the story. James Wan returns as director for Aquaman 2, which is currently scheduled for release in December 2022.

Filming on Aquaman 2 kicked off at the very end of June, with Momoa traveling to London weeks later to join the production. Save for a behind the scenes pic of an icy cave, little has been revealed of the Aquaman 2 set, though cast members – most recently Momoa – have supplied plenty of looks at their various training regimens. In addition to Momoa, returning players include Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Patrick Wilson. As for newcomers, Game of Thrones alum Pilou Asbaek joins the franchise in an unknown role.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Momoa had quite the surprise in store for fans on Sunday, as he officially unveiled his new Aquaman 2 suit. Momoa offered a side by side comparison of his old and new costumes on social media, writing, “Second round. New suit. More action.” Fans might be shocked to see how different the new suit is, with its dark blue color, lack of gloves, and alternate armor patterns. Check it out below.

The suit from the first Aquaman hews much closer to Arthur’s most famous look from the comics, though the updated costume has some connections to the source material as well. It looks like Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will introduce Arthur’s stealth suit; the new costume is much sleeker and understated than the sharper, scaled original. To theorize about what this could mean for Aquaman 2‘s story, it could be that Arthur’s newest conflict requires a more subtle, careful approach.

Early signs point to Aquaman 2 exploring Necrus, an underwater kingdom from the comics whose location often changes mysteriously. Perhaps to visit Necrus, Arthur must adopt a new suit in order to fit in with the people there. The debut of a new costume is always cause for excitement when it comes to superhero projects, and Aquaman’s fits Momoa especially well. The actor also said he would be dying his hair blonde for this latest installment, though the above image doesn’t show it just yet. That will likely be another fun reveal further down the line; for now, fans can pore over this Aquaman 2 first look and pick out all the individual details.
