Warning! Spoilers ahead for Aquaman #66 from Andy Lanning, Ron Marz, and Miguel Mendonça

In the latest issue of DC Comics’ Aquamanthe former King of Atlantis is searching for a way to keep the Seven Seas safe from the Frost King and his Endless Winter. The ice-cold foe has unleashed legions of monstrous ice avatars upon the world that he’s covered in a bitter magical blizzard, and this includes the oceans. As such, Aquaman looks to the old legends, going out in search of a new army to command that would be perfectly suited to take down the Frost King’s armies. What better way to combat ice monsters than with fire monsters (even underwater)?

In Aquaman #66, Arthur, Mera, and their daughter Andy meet with the new government of Atlantis, as the monarchy is no more as of the previous finale issue from Kelly Sue DeConnick. Coming up with a plan, Arthur heads down into the kingdom’s underwater heating systems, in search of the vents that lead down to the realm near the planet’s core, where the Fire Trolls reside. With their help, Aquaman hopes to turn the tide against the Frost King and his avatars.

However, the power and equally fiery disposition of the Fire Trolls appear to be more than Arthur Curry bargained for, and he’s nearly overwhelmed by the monsters before the timely arrival of his wife Mera. While she had agreed to stay behind, it turns out that she showed up just in time for a much-needed rescue. It’s also a good thing she didn’t listen and chose to support her new husband, as she’s able to use her hydro-kinesis to protect them both from the boiling heat of the trolls themselves. Furthermore, when Arthur reaches out with his telepathy, he learns that they are impressed by her power. Thanks to his wife, the Fire Trolls fall under Aquaman’s command, and the couple leads the Fire Trolls into battle.

Together with their new army, Aquaman and Mera first head to Atlantis to break the Frost King’s siege on the kingdom. Next, they begin work on freeing the rest of the Seven Seas from his control, fully intending to locate and find the Frost King himself once they do. Meanwhile, the Frost King is seen based in the heart of the storm that he’s created to cover the globe, apparently searching the family he once had before he became the villain he is at the present.

It seems as though finding and recruiting an entire fire troll army to fight ice monsters potentially counts as Arthur and Mera’s honeymoon, as they’ve only been married for as long as the previous issue. Somehow, that seems to fit for the two of them. In any case, it will be interesting to see if the Fire Troll army will be a one-time thing, or if Aquaman will continue to employ his new forces as DC’s Endless Winter continues.
