The relationship between Batman and Robin is one of the most famous dynamics in the Dark Knight’s lore, and one fan recently uncovered a subtle difference between the two in Batman: Arkham Knight that highlights their roles as student and teacher. While not a well-received as the previous two titles in Rocksteady’s excellent Batman: Arkham series, 2015’s Arkham Knight was widely praised for digging deep into the mindset of Bruce Wayne and his connections to both Gotham City and his various protégées, as well as the mental toll Batman’s eternal mission takes on him.

While Robin was completely absent from 2009’s surprise hit Batman: Arkham Asylum, Tim Drake’s iteration of the iconic Boy Wonder had a small cameo in 2011 follow up Batman: Arkham City – where he also featured as a playable character in the game’s Riddler Challenge Rooms. From there, Robin would gain an expanded role in the Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC and Batman: Arkham Knight, the latter of which featured segments where players alternating control of Batman and his ward/sidekick as they worked to contain those infected with the deceased Joker’s Titan-infused blood.

One Reddit user by the handle of kingmidasrx recently uncovered a subtle programming detail in Batman: Arkham Knight, which they then shared with r/BatmanArkham in the form of a quick gameplay video. During the segments where players control both Batman and Robin, the AI Robin crouches along with the player as Batman, but when players crouch as Robin, the AI Batman still stands, knowing from experience that there is no need to duck at that moment.

Rocksteady may be moving away from the Batman mythos for its upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, but Robin will be returning to the world of gaming thanks to WB Games Montréal’s Gotham Knights. This reboot of the Batman: Arkham series will feature all of the stealth and combat gameplay fans loved from Rocksteady’s DC-based titles with a fresh storyline that sees Tim Drake join forces with other former sidekicks Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood as they work to defend Gotham after Bruce Wayne’s supposed death. However, fans will have to wait to see Robin strap on his red battlesuit once more, as Gotham Knights was recently delayed all the way until some unspecified time next year to allow for more time to polish the game.

Little details like Robin following along whenever Batman ducks but not the other way around is a big part of why Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham titles are considered some of the greatest superhero games of all time, as well as a sign of just how passionate and well-versed the developers were about the lore of one of DC’s most legendary icons. It seems that even at the end of Batman’s career, Robin still has much to learn about crouching at the right time during the never-ending quest to bring justice to Gotham City.
