Ever since the season 5 premiere of Arrow, those who watch the show and diehard fans of the comic books have been excited and intrigued about the presence of a very recognizable figure in the form of a police artist’s sketch. Shown to Oliver Queen by Felicity Smoak, the sketch showed a man wearing ski goggles and was described as another anonymous vigilante fighting crime on the streets of Star City. Longtime comic book readers may have quickly put things together to work out that this was Adrian Chase, otherwise known as Vigilante; a character created in the 1980s by Marv Wolfman and George Perez.

The actor behind Chase (Josh Segarra) has now spoken about his character’s journey on Arrow and what we will see of it during the show’s fifth season. He also touched on whether or not the twists and turns to come will please those who have been fans of Arrow‘s comic book source material for some time.

Speaking to Comic Book ahead of the 100th episode of Arrow, Segarra hoped to calm the minds of fans who may have felt that Arrow storylines similar to Chase’s haven’t hit all the right spots in the past. He also clarified his character’s comments in a recent episode, concerning his previous thoughts of nothing good ever coming from people behind masks. Asked about the police sketch, Segarra said:

That’s what I think is going to be interesting, is what parts of the comic are we going to get to put on the show? I know the answer to that but the audience don’t. But that’s what [has] been great is that we’re trying to keep it as much as we can in that world, but also keep it exciting because I don’t want any plot twists to be a thing where people are expecting something and don’t get them. That’s always sad, when you think something is going to be great and then it’s a letdown. So I’m hoping that we get the right pieces along the way.

The biggest question that I have for myself as an actor is ‘why does this person become the person that they are?’ So what’s going to be hard is that in the middle of the season I get to introduce Vigilante. So now I’m getting to tell that backstory and we get to tell the biggest pieces and get to show him becoming who he is before episode 7.

After a fourth season that failed to live up to the standard of the seasons that had come before it, Arrow now looks to be on the right track when it comes to going back to its roots. The show’s producers had promised that fans that season 5 would be more in line with the series as it was during its first two seasons – and they look to be sticking closely to that promise so far, especially with the introduction of such an integral character like Chase from the Green Arrow universe. It’s going to be especially interesting to see how a character so close to the original Oliver Queen we all met is going to challenge the Green Arrow moving forward.

Viewing figures show that Arrow is yet to hit two million American viewers this season – something which it hasn’t struggled with at all in the past. There’s the possibility that this moving back to the original times of the show could be too little, too late, especially when one of the shows that this one spawned, The Flash is still managing to bring in over three million viewers for its season 3 premiere.

What should be remembered however is that Arrow will forever be the original. It’s the show that allowed fans to gain such access into this world and without it, shows like The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow likely wouldn’t exist – or at least not in the form they’re in today.
