Arrow’s Stephen Amell Clarifies ‘Flashpoint’ Comments

One of the biggest questions surrounding DC’s television universe heading into the summer was whether or not The Flash‘s Season 2 cliffhanger would affect its sibling series Arrow, as well. With The CW conducting an entire universe of DC TV show – Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and now Supergirl due to the network’s recent acquisition – it’s Oliver Queen himself, actor Stephen Amell who’s is left to tackle inquiries concerning the future as the “Flashpoint” storyline begins.

Amell made waves recently with his comments at New Jersey’s Heroes and Villains Fan Fest last weekend, being directly quoted as confirming that the “Flashpoint” storyline would “majorly” affect Season 5 of Arrow. Within a day of this story circulating around the web, Amell himself has taken to Facebook to further explain his recent comments and potentially squash these misquoted reports.

After The People’s Choice Awards first quoted Amell as directly confirming, then teasing “Flashpoint” changes, the actor clarified his statements on his personal Facebook page. Claiming that his confirmation was intended to be sarcastic, Amell then went on to state that he was unsure whether or not The Flash‘s Season 2 cliffhanger would at all affect Season 5 of Arrow:

“Actually I sarcastically said “sure”… And then I seriously said, “I have no idea whatsoever”… but let’s go with confirm, I guess.”

The actor went on to make a statement that sparked a debate over the use of “affect” and “effect” in the comments section, but that’s neither here nor there. What is important is that we still have no idea whether or not Barry’s recent time traveling escapades will in any way be of consequence to the rest of the DC television universe.

These recent comments by Amell do cast some serious doubt as to whether or not the “Flashpoint” storyline will even be noticed on Arrow in any way whatsoever (in fact, it now appears unlikely). With the cast and crew already back on set to begin filming Season 5, it seems implausible that the series’ lead would still be unaware of this major plot point – which would likely affect early episodes, if any.

It is possible that the studio wants to keep this story arc a secret for the time being, but with Amell recently predicting that Season 5 of Arrow will be going back to basics so to speak, this again feels unlikely. Time traveling, multiple dimensions, and alternate Earths all appear to go against the refocused series that fans keep hearing about from the cast and crew behind Arrow. That said, with far more questions than answers, it sounds as though audiences will have to tune to the Season 5 premiere to see exactly what Stephen Amell and company have in store.

Arrow season 5 is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 8PM ET; The Flash season 3 is slated to air on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 8PM ET; DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will return on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 8PM ET, Supergirl will make its season 2 debut on The CW on Monday, October 10, 2016 also at 8PM ET.
