Warning: SPOILERS for Legends of Tomorrow season 7, episode 12, “Too Legit To Quit.”

The penultimate episode of Legends of Tomorrow season 7 may have explained why Sara Lance didn’t join the other Canaries in the future forecast by the Green Arrow and the Canaries backdoor pilot. The obvious real-world explanation is that actress Caity Lotz was already tied to Legends of Tomorrow and could not join the other Arrow heroines in a new spinoff. However, a video from Sara Lance’s future in the episode “Too Legit To Quit” may offer a very good narrative reason for why White Canary might be unable to help her fellow Birds of Prey.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The story of “Too Legit To Quit” found the Legends forced to bargain with the Evil AI Gideon, who had been trying to destroy the team throughout Legends of Tomorrow season 7. Thankfully, Legends of Tomorrow‘s human Gideon created earlier in season 7 was able to persuade her electronic counterpart to spare the Legends and take them back to their proper places in time, after showing them something to assure them that they had a stable future ahead of them.  For newlyweds Sara Lance and Ava Sharpe, this glimpse took the form of a video of a young girl excitedly talking about how much fun she was having learning archery at summer camp. The video ended with her saying goodbye to “Mom” and “Mama,” with the clear implication being that she was Ava and Sara’s daughter.

While it is hard to imagine White Canary retiring from heroism after a long career as a crime-fighter and Captain of a timeship, motherhood might finally persuade Sara Lance to settle down. Despite her wild streak, Sara’s family was important to her and many of her actions, such as joining the League of Assassins, were based upon her desire to protect her loved ones. This could explain why the two Black Canaries and the new Green Arrow of 2040 never sought Sara’s help in rescuing William Clayton after he was abducted by time travelers. Logically, they would have known that Sara had retired from time travel to focus on raising her daughter.

Another reason for White Canary’s apparent absence from the events of Green Arrow and the Canaries is that White Canary’s truce with the Evil Gideon was based around her retiring from heroism and not doing anything that might further alter the timeline. Getting involved with Black Siren’s plan to restore Mia Queen’s pre-Crisis memories with Cisco Ramon’s memory restoring device would certainly violate the letter and spirit of that agreement. So would communicating with Dinah Drake, whose existence following Crisis on Infinite Earths may well have constituted an anachronism.

While this is an interesting point to consider, it seems unlikely that the Green Arrow and the Canaries storyline will ever be resolved, due to most of the actors involved having moved on to other projects. Beyond that, it seems unlikely that the truce with Evil Gideon will last, given that the teasers for Legends of Tomorrow‘s season 7 finale show the team reunited and in peril after being sent back to their respective homes. This means that Sara Lance’s future daughter may never come to exist, assuming she ever existed in the first place and that the visions of each Legend of Tomorrow‘s ending fates were real.
