Warning: This post contains spoilers for The Flash season 8, episode 6.

The Arrowverse’s Avery Ho represents the best way The Flash can end. The Flash season 8’s episode 6, called “Impulsive Excessive Disorder,” sees Bart and Nora, Barry and Iris’ children from the future, returning to December 2013 in a bid to fix the timeline they presumably changed after fighting alongside their parents to defeat Godspeed in the present.

Avery Ho is but a science intern at Fast Track Labs when Bart and Nora meet her on a coffee run near the Central City Police Department. Avery is studying temporal dynamics and quantum divergence and the West-Allen kids recruit her to help them figure out how to stop the Royal Flush Gang from killing people without changing the timeline. Avery forged a connection with Bart and helped him and Nora throughout the episode. Considering how big a role she played, it’s possible she might return again in the back half of The Flash season 8. Crucially, she may be the key to how the series closes.

In the comics, Avery Ho got her powers after being struck by lightning during the Speed Force Storm, an occurrence that played out in season 7. She was mentored by Barry for a while before going on to become The Flash of China. Barry is no longer the only speedster and the Arrowverse series has expanded to include several more, including Kid Flash, Jay Garrick’s Flash, Impulse, XS, and Godspeed, among others. Having multiple speedsters as a part of a global network would allow The Flash to grow and to more universally become about legacy. Ensuring the world is being taken care of by Bart, Nora, and other potential speedsters like Avery means Barry could retire as The Flash in the future, leaving the world-saving to a new generation of speedsters. The Flash could end on that note while also paving the way for a very hopeful future, with the Scarlet Speedster passing on the torch.

The Flash could be renewed for season 9, but it’s nearing the end of its run either way. What better way for the show to end than in growing the number of speedsters around the world? While there’s no telling if Avery will ever become a speedster before The Flash ends, her introduction, knowledge of time travel and link with The Flash family could lead her down that path. At the moment, Barry is at his fastest and most powerful. It makes sense that he would go on to mentor not only his kids, but others who might obtain speed and want to do good in the world. Avery seems like a most likely candidate. There’s a lot about her audiences don’t know yet, and there is still plenty of time to explore her backstory and future before the show wraps.

The Flash has brought in a number of speedster allies over the course of the show and it would be apt if it ended with Barry’s retirement in the future as a new host of superheroes take to the streets around the world alongside Bart and Nora. It would certainly be a fitting end and a continuation of The Flash’s story as a hero and legacy outside of his family.
