It might be a bold claim but Ash Vs Evil Dead episode “The Morgue” has arguably the grossest moment in the entire series. The first Evil Dead was produced on a tiny budget by a group of passionate young filmmakers – including director Sam Raimi and star Bruce Campbell – and its sheer inventiveness and originality made it a cult success. It ran into trouble in countries such as the UK, however, which trimmed down some of its nastier scenes of gore. Raimi’s follow-up movie Crimewave proved to be something of a dud that he had a hard time making, so he returned to his roots for Evil Dead 2.

The sequel is a masterpiece and effortlessly combines comedy and horror, with Campbell putting in a stellar turn as Ash. Evil Dead 2 was a hit and Universal foot the bill for the third part of the trilogy Army Of Darkness. An attempt was made to clean the series up for mainstream viewers, with the sequel having a PG-13 rating and putting more of a focus on comedy and action. Sadly, the film was a flop but gained a considerable cult following in the years that followed. An Evil Dead remake arrived in 2013 starring Jane Levy and while fans were somewhat mixed at the time, it’s now considered something of an unrelenting horror gem.

Of course, franchise devotees wanted to see Bruce Campbell return as their favorite idiotic demon slayer, and they got their wish when Starz Ash Vs Evil Dead debuted in 2015. The show lasted for three seasons and unleashed a flood of practical gore and creature effects. It was a most enjoyable horror series and proved Campbell could still pratfall with the best of them. Ash Vs Evil Dead season 2’s “The Morgue” quickly went viral for one particular sequence that seemed designed to be as gross as humanly possible.

For context, “The Morgue” sees Ash head to the titular location to retrieve the Necronomicon from a corpse. Being Ash Vs Evil Dead, it turns out the body’s intestines have been possessed and attack Ash like a snake. Here’s where things take a bad turn, as the intestines wrap around Ash and slowly pull him toward the rear end of the body. Despite the intrepid hero’s attempts to free himself he’s pulled headfirst inside the rear of the body – complete with revolting fart noises – and finds himself trapped inside.

This moment from Ash Vs Evil Dead’s “The Morgue” is the very definition of being so disgusting it becomes funny again. This is helped enormously by Campbell’s committed performance and Ash’s – understandable – horror at his situation. The character found himself in plenty of nasty situations in the franchise, but “The Morgue” takes the crown.
