The long-running Assassin’s Creed series is well-known for its vast range of history-based storylines and stealth-like gameplay, which recently transformed from exclusively assassin gameplay to huge open-world RPGs. In a franchise this large and ambitious, it is unsurprising that tons of glitches and bugs have slipped past the developers and been discovered over the years.

Although patches are released to fix these mishaps, many have been left untouched and are rather welcome to stay. From a concerning lack of facial features to graceful flying chariots, these amusing glitches are infamous for their physics-defying absurdity and the nonstop laughter they have caused among the gaming community.

When Boats Fly

Black Flag introduced boats to the Assassins Creed franchise, which were pretty satisfying and graceful to sail until this hilariously unorthodox glitch demolished those deceiving misconceptions of luxury. Boats randomly slip around and move as if they’re on ice, causing hilariously unexpected mayhem and chaos.

Moreover, the boats can launch themselves into the sky, bust some dance moves, and dive straight back into the ocean depths. Other times, the boats can mysteriously sink and disappear, leaving a large ‘hole’ in the ocean, in which the player’s former crewmates are levitating, rather than floating. This comical glitch is made even funnier by the fact that throughout this madness, every crewmate remains completely unbothered as if nothing out of the ordinary has happened, continuing their jolly sea shanties.

Reaching New Heights

Another chucklesome glitch occurs in the series’ latest entry, Valhalla, where one of the  series’ best assassins, Eivor, is suddenly flung deep into the atmosphere, where they begin to fall and are ‘desynchronized’ (essentially Valhalla’s death screen).

This glitch can be hilarious to experience, as both the serious tone and realism of the game immediately evaporate when witnessing a Viking pierce through the sky. Despite their impending doom, Eivor is amusingly unbothered by being shot into the atmosphere, and can actually see some pretty incredible views before reality kicks in, and they scream and freak out as they rapidly tumble back down to Earth.

Breaking Cut Scenes

Strangely, one of the many staples of the Assassin’s Creed series is this hilarious glitch, as it happens so frequently across so many games. Characters can behave very strangely during cut scenes, such as by walking around or talking when they aren’t scripted to do so.

This hiccup doesn’t stop there. Characters can be wearing completely different items of clothing than they originally were during these cut scenes, humorously shattering the realism and emotional impacts many of these dramatic scenes intend to deliver. Many characters often struggle to do certain things when this glitch occurs, such as laying flat on top of a chair, rather than sitting on its seat. Of course, they do this with absolutely no emotion whatsoever.

Infinite Enemy Spawning

In the more recent Assassin’s Creed games, enemy spawning has been drastically increased, which sometimes triggers this hysterical glitch where dozens of enemies can continuously spawn non-stop, creating some very goofy moments.

This hiccup becomes even funnier when there are so many enemies that they struggle to all stand on a building, leading to enemies accidentally pushing each other to their doom. On top of this, every enemy that spawns screams the exact same line, so there is a constant sea of shouting and screaming, making the moment even more hilarious.

Falling Into The Void

Out-of-bounds glitches are some of the most common and interesting hiccups throughout Assassin’s Creed. However, like many glitches, they often lead to disaster, throwing the player into gaming’s ever-present void of nothingness.

These glitches often offer incredible views of the Assassin’s Creed series’ best places, before amusingly plunging the screaming protagonist deep into the depths of nothingness to their untimely demise. Curiously, players can sometimes get stuck on random broken elements of the map, such as water sections, trapping them in a cruel, unending cycle of goofiness.

The Flying Chariot

Taken straight from a fantasy book, this hysterical glitch occurs in Assassin’s Creed: Origins and witnesses the player take to the skies and journey across the map in a comical flying chariot, led by two horse-disguised unicorns.

Although the assassin looks like Santa Claus within this glitch, he brings weapons and murder rather than the Christmas spirit. This goofy hiccup is amusing to see happen, mixing the serious tone of Assassins Creed with the charming magic of a fairy tale. Once again, the protagonist seems unamused by his new magic chariot and abilities, keeping his stone-cold hardened look and topping off this hilarious moment.

Arno’s Missing Face

Arguably the most horrifying glitch of the whole franchise happens in Assassin’s Creed: Unity. For no apparent reason, during some cut scenes, Arno’s face can be missing crucial features, to the point at which he looks unforgettably hilarious.

Arno is viewed as one of the best characters in Unity, and it is therefore astonishingly shocking to see him in such a state. It’s interesting to note that despite losing crucial features like his brain, nose, and skin, Arno still kept his magnificent hair. This hiccup becomes even funnier when it occurs during intensely emotional cut scenes, like where Arno kisses Elise, completely ruining the anticipated romantic scene, and instead permanently etching Arno’s disturbing face kiss the completely unbothered Elise into every gamer’s memory.

The Rainbow Sky

Another hilarious and strange glitch occurs in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag, which introduced rainbows thanks to its beautiful new graphics. The hiccup can randomly distort this rainbow whenever it pleases so that the entire sky is filled with one gigantic monster rainbow.

This unexplained rainbow sky brought an incredibly goofy tone to the game, with NPCs completely oblivious, unbothered by the abnormal weather forecast, and going about their day. Tense fight scenes are reduced to slapstick comedy when the divine rainbow sky watches over the map, as the shouting and conflicts cannot be taken seriously, and instead become hilarious to witness. Perhaps this hilarious unresolved mystery could be explored in the Assassin’s Creed show.

Twitching Animals

Another humorous and seemingly random glitch happens primarily in Assassin’s Creed 3/Black Flag, where animals act in incredibly uncharacteristic ways, in the most extreme way, by defying every law of physics known to man (or horse).

This hilarious hiccup ensures madness will transpire, as horses breakdance, cows levitate, deer phase into assassins, and reindeer dash into the sky. All these circumstances corrupt the realism and seriousness of the Assassin’s Creed series, leading to some hysterical moments.

The Flying Assassin

For an assassin who needs to be stealthy, flying above everyone in plain sight probably isn’t the greatest idea. One of the all-time funniest glitches in the Assassin’s Creed series happens in Brotherhood when for no apparent reason, Ezio can start rising up into the air after a wall jump.

This glitch gets even more hysterical, as overdramatic orchestral music plays in the background, whilst Ezio slowly and fiercely flies over every NPC and building in the area. Moreover, not a single NPC notices or acknowledges the fact that someone is flying above them, proving that Ezio is, incredibly, still acting stealthily. As he drifts up into the beautiful sun-kissed sky, his stone-cold reactions prove that even with this extraordinary newfound ability of flight, he still remains one of gaming’s finest assassins.
