With Season 4: Part 2 of Attack on Titan in full swing, fans are thrilled to see the culmination of such a wild series come to a head. Throughout its intricate story, viewers were witness to some unforgettable characters, insane plot twists and iconic moments.

Still, such a series is also bound to have some warring opinions on everything from story arcs, plot points and development during the series. Despite what the majority may think, some Reddit users admitted the unpopular opinions they hold about Attack on Titan.

Season 1’s Mystery Was The Best Arc

As Attack on Titan progresses, fans learn more and more that they actually know less and less about what’s going on. In part, it makes finally uncovering the mystery of the Titans one step at a time all the more satisfying to watch.

However, fans like forcehatin claim they “liked Season 1 and not knowing” what has caused so much chaos in Paradis. While Seasons 2 and 3 are generally regarded as superior to Season 1, there’s nothing quite like that initial shock that comes with seeing the Titan invasion for the first time.

Eren Kruger Is The Best Character

At the end of Season 3, it is revealed that the notorious “Owl” leading the Eldian restoration against Marley was in fact a Marlean soldier by the name of Eren Kruger. After passing on the Attack Titan to Grisha on Paradis, Grisha went on to name his son after him in honor of his sacrifice.

While his appearance is short-lived, fans like MrLoveMilk agree that “Eren Kruger is the best … character.” This is mostly due to the fact that he only appears in one episode, but it could be argued that his actions changed the course of the series in one of the most impactful plot twists yet.

Season 4 Is The Worst Season

Season 4 of Attack on Titan follows two final arcs, those being the attack on Marley and the final confrontation on Paradis. Since its anime debut, it has been met with widespread praise and even showcases a few episodes among the top-rated television episodes of all time.

Not all fans love it, however, as Redditor Chicken_Nuggies123 believes that “Season 4 is much worse than the first 3.” Season 4 does evolve into more of a war story about oppression, genocide, and political conflict, but some would rather go back to watching the simplicity of humans battling Titans.

Annie’s Return Made Her More Likable

As the main antagonist, Annie Leonhart is an original member of the 104th Training Corps who eventually reveals herself as the Female Titan. Almost instantly, viewers felt betrayed by her quest to capture Eren Yeager and slay the Survey Corps in the process.

In Season 4, Redditor WeGhettoFlowers actually thinks that her return “made her more likable and made the story more enjoyable”. Not only does Annie begin to realize the consequences of her actions, but she sets aside her long hatred of Eldia to team up with them in an attempt to stop The Rumbling.

Younger Eren Is The Worst Character

As the protagonist of the first three seasons, Eren’s character has unique evolution from a naive child to a hopeful warrior, searching for the secrets of the Titans in a quest to kill every last one. With plenty of missteps along the way, he eventually emerges from Season 3 with a new goal to find those who stranded his people.

Despite all that development, Redditor ILoveSayoriMore believes him to still be “one of [the] least favorite characters in the series.” While Eren is an older, stone-cold, unstoppable force in Season 4, it can be argued that his younger version can be a bit overdramatic, impatient, and wildly stubborn.

Levi Is Overhyped

As one of the fan-favorite characters of Attack on Titan, Captain Levi Ackerman is the deadliest member of the Survey Corps and is regarded as “humanity’s greatest solider.” His icy demeanor, unrivaled fighting ability, and faith in his team make him one of the most iconic characters in the show.

Some fans like MatemanAltobelli still claim that “he’s massively overhyped regardless”. While Levi does have some of the all-time best fight scenes and moments in the series, it is also important to understand that he is still a minor piece of a complicated puzzle, so it’s understandable why some may not think he’s such a standout.

Attack On Titan Has Pacing Issues

As opposed to most Western storytelling, Attack on Titan chooses to model many other animes with lots of time skips, callbacks, allusions to outside events throughout the series. I can be disoriented for those unaccustomed to this style, but it pays off when secrets and plot points are finally revealed.

Redditor RandomShyGuy10 still thinks that, regardless, “it has a few pacing issues.” Especially during Season 3, it can feel like the slower buildup leads to a climactic twist that comes all at once, leaving more questions than answers, so it’s expected that some fans may not quite like this form of storytelling.

Gabi Is Heavily Misunderstood

When the Marley arc is introduced in Season 4, one of its main characters is a young Warrior candidate named Gabi Braun, who hopes to one day inherit the Armor Titan and destroy Eldia. She herself is a brainwashed Eldian, so there’s an irony in her mission to rid the world of her own people.

Fans like Superb_Ad1765 assert that “Gabi is a heavily misunderstood character” at her core. Many fans may dislike her due to her actions against fan-favorite characters, but in reality, she is the product of oppression, propaganda, and tragedy simply doing what she believes is right while trying to make sense of the conflict.

Armin Was The Right Choice To Inherit the Colossal Titan

During the Return to Shiganshina arc in Season 3, a climactic choice comes when the Survey Corps must decide which dying soldier will live on to become the Colossal Titan: Armin or Commander Erwin. Armin is ultimately saved, but it left fans indecisive as to who might’ve been the better choice.

Despite Commander Erwin’s unmatched leadership and battlefield prowess, Vayrox_Ayp says “Armin was the right choice.” While Erwin would have been near-unstoppable with the powers of a Titan, he had already seen so much death in battle that many fans argue it was finally time to lay him down to rest.
