This is where humanity hides from giant monsters that prey on humans, though when the manga begins, there’s been a long period of peace. That’s shattered when the creatures breach the outer wall and cause mass casualties. Protagonist Eren Jaeger and his friends soon join the Survey Corps to fight back, and the story gets exponentially more complex from there as the history of the city, the Titans and Eren’s own past are revealed over time.

While the manga was insanely popular, it was the success of the anime that made Attack On Titan a global smash. It brought the great characters and engrossing lore of the manga, in addition to the gory battles, to life. The anime will end with the upcoming fourth series, though some fans are worried about how it will manage to condense such a large amount of story into one season. In addition to video games and toys, Attack On Titan also received a two-part live action movie adaptation in 2015 that was met with mixed reviews. An English language remake is also planned, with Andy Muschietti attached to direct.

In the history of Attack On Titan, a woman named Ymir Fritz became the very first Titan after making a deal with unknown beings. This power came with the drawback of her only having a thirteen-year lifespan, and her powers were inherited by nine of her people, known as Eldians. After a protracted battle with the nation of Marley the Eldian Karl Fritz – who possessed the power of the Founding Titan – took his people to Paradis Island for self-imposed exile, and vowed to keep them there so long as Marley left them in peace.

A key reason Fritz was able to do this was down to The Founding Titan’s “Coordinate” power, which has two key functions. Firstly, they have the power to control other Pure Titans and direct them in battle. Secondly, Attack On Titan’s Coordinate power gives the wielder the ability to erase the memories of the Subjects Of Ymir, AKA the descendants of Ymir Fritz. This is how the King was able to make his subjects forget entirely about the world beyond the walls or the war with Marley.

For those possessing royal blood, the Coordinate ability also lets them inherit the memories of previous inheritors of the Founding Titan power. Since Attack On Titan’s protagonist Eren – the current wielder of the Founding Titan ability – isn’t of royal blood, this ability isn’t available to him. Those of royal descant also inherit the vow of the first ruler behind the city walls, which sees them devoted to never waging war and making a peaceful life for their subjects within the walls.
