New Avatar 2 BTS image shows James Cameron on a military lab set. Cameron’s long-delayed Avatar sequel remains shrouded in secrecy, though some teases have begun making their way to the public.

Indeed the first real Avatar 2 images recently made their debut, including one showing Jake and Neytiri’s adopted son Spider. Another recent release featured concept art showing the denizens of Pandora’s reef environment with their water-world adaptations. Of course there have also been plenty of BTS images, including ones showing stars Sigourney Weaver and Kate Winslet doing underwater work using Cameron’s new and sophisticated performance-capture tech.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The latest BTS image to make its way out from Avatar 2 emphasizes not the reef-world element of the movie but the high-tech military side of things. In the picture (via Empire), Cameron works with an actor in a military laboratory set, and there are lots of interesting little details that can be glimpsed. See the image in the space below:

Everything in the image looks very sterile and forbiddingly high-tech as one would expect, with the exception of what appear to be some giant dice hanging in the corner of the room. If these are indeed lucky dice for someone, it seems that person feels the need for a lot of luck. In another perhaps telling detail, the actor reclining in the chair in front of Cameron looks to be wearing a mask and oxygen tank, suggesting that the environment in the lab is not entirely amenable to human existence at the point in the story being filmed. Of course this wouldn’t be an Avatar film – or a James Cameron sci-fi film in general – without this high-tech angle. Indeed in many ways the original Avatar was about the juxtaposition between the natural world of the Na’vi, with its added mystical element, and the destructive technology that humanity brought to bear against the moon Pandora in their quest for the valuable unobtanium they discovered there.

It seems that in many ways Avatar 2 will continue with this contrast between the natural and unnatural as a very important visual and thematic element. But of course Cameron can’t resist upping the ante on his past work, so he’s also bringing in the Pandora reef-world and the differently-adapted Na’vi who live there. The film also will address family-related themes as Jake and Neytiri try to raise their children while greedy humans once again threaten their peaceful home. It remains to be seen if Avatar 2 is embraced as fully as the original Avatar was when it came out in 2009, but what isn’t in doubt is Cameron’s commitment to making the world of Pandora come alive using his own array of high-tech filmmaking tools.
