A brand new set photo from the production of the long-awaited Avatar 2 showcases the reunion of director, James Cameron, and star of the original film and its upcoming sequels, Sam Worthington. Cameron’s first Avatar film hit theatres in 2009 to commercial and critical acclaim, with most reviews praising the film’s groundbreaking use of visual effects and the many performances from the star-studded cast. After its release, the film went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time for almost a decade, becoming a staple in cinematic history.

The first of many upcoming sequels, Avatar 2 is set to follow Jake Sully, a former human from the original film, as he lives with his newfound family formed on the planet of Pandora. Once a familiar threat returns to finish what was previously started, Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi race to protect their planet. Many faces from Avatar are set to return, including Worthington, Zoe Saldana, CCH Pounder, Giovanni Ribisi, and Sigourney Weaver.

In an interview from Total Film with producer John Landau, an image from the set of the upcoming blockbuster showcases the long-awaited reunion between Avatar‘s director and starring cast member Worthington. The image shows Worthington in motion capture gear alongside Cameron as the two seemingly watch a run-through of a filmed scene. Within the interview, Landau also teases the interconnected story arch between the four sequels and how they will all tie together to create an “epicsaga.” See the full image of Cameron and Worthington below:

Previous behind-the-scenes photos of the Avatar 2 set have not been as tame as this most recent image appears to be, with a plethora of other set pieces being showcased in the others which points to the production of the film being more than insane. For instance, in one of the previous photos, stars Zoe Saldana, Sam Worthington, Kate Winslet, and Cliff Curtis were seen in full motion capture gear whilst swimming in a pool and holding onto a foam noodle. Having to give a believable performance whilst still being careful of the motion capture gear and swimming at the same time is no easy feat, but past set photos and reports have showcased the extensive procedures stars have had to go through to complete filming.

All of these set photos being released has only increased the amount of excitement that is surrounding the upcoming film saga and, with the clearly extensive techniques being utilized by the cast and crew, fans of the franchise can rest assured that the film will not be a disappointment in the shadow of its predecessor. Furthermore, the newly unveiled image of Cameron and Worthington on set continues to highlight the passion and enjoyment that is being experienced through the development of these films, hopefully leading to the franchise continuing to dominate. Audiences can catch Avatar in theatres on December 16, 2022.
