Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender showrunner Albert Kim hints the first season will contain some new characters. The animated Avatar has long been considered one of the best kids’ shows of all time, so expectations for Netflix’s live-action adaptation are just about sky-high. The original show follows titular last airbender Aang as he prepares to confront his destiny as the savior of his war-torn world. Avatar is often praised for its compelling character development and clever world-building, and there’s much interest in seeing how Netflix will bring it all to life.

The new Avatar has been in the works for years now, but only in recent months has it gained real traction. Kim took over as showrunner following the exits of original creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino. This year, several casting decisions were announced, starting with the news that Gordon Cormier will play Aang. Recently, Fire Lord Ozai actor Daniel Dae Kim revealed filming for Avatar: The Last Airbender is expected to kick off in the coming weeks, but work is already well underway for the creative team.

Kim took to social media on Monday to preview what his week looks like. He’s on the set of Avatar: The Last Airbender now, and it sounds like there’s a lot going on there over the next few days. “Lots of big scenes–and new characters–coming up,” Kim wrote alongside a picture of his director’s chair. It’s the “new characters” tease that’s bound to pique fans’ interest. Avatar: The Last Airbender has already cast a slew of familiar characters from Katara (Kiawentiio) to Gyatso (Lim Kay Siu), but no newcomers have been announced just yet. Still, it isn’t too surprising to hear that the Netflix show intends to add some characters of its own. Any adaptation has to make some adjustments from the source material, and there have already been a few signs that the new Avatar will change some things. While last year’s rumors of an age change for Katara and Sokka have been proven false, Daniel Dae Kim’s casting as Ozai hints the villain will have a bigger role in the live-action season 1 than he does in the animated one.

Therefore, it’s clear that while Avatar: The Last Airbender might still strive to maintain the spirit of the original, there will be some surprises ahead. Whether these new characters will have a major impact on the plot or will just be brief figures Aang and his friends encounter on their journey remains to be seen, but it’s exciting to know there’s still so much to uncover about this new show. Hopefully details about these new characters will emerge soon.
