Avatar: The Last Airbender has a rough history in terms of video game adaptations. The original THQ games were decent, especially compared to 2010s The Last Airbender adaptation of the poorly-received film, but nothing incredibly special. However, one thing that made Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Burning Earth stand out was how incredibly easy it is to get achievements on the Xbox 360 version.

Introduced in the early days of Xbox 360, achievements became a phenomenon where players are either obsessed with ranking up their score or couldn’t care about them at all. The ultimate online bragging rights for many, achievements were and are a fun way to keep players engaged with a title even after they’ve beaten the game.

Games like Gears of War and Halo make their hardest achievements nearly impossible feats, while others dole out the same amount of gamerscore for doing the bare minimum. Telltale’s The Walking Dead doles out all the achievements just for beating the story. Others, like Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Burning Earth, reward players with 1000 gamerscore just for trying out the first level. The Avatar game became a viral hit when players uploaded videos quickly getting all five achievements in under two minutes.

Ranking up gamerscore in Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Burning Earth doesn’t involve pulling off certain moves, completing specific quest-lines, or beating the game on different difficulties. Instead, all it takes to get all five achievements is reaching a hit counter of at least 50. All the achievements in the game are directly related to the combo counter, giving a reward for each time a player adds 10 to the counter all the way up to 50.

In an interview with MTV, THQ explained that they specifically designed the achievements for young kids. They wanted to make sure they could stir excitement within younger players by granting them their first achievements and weren’t crafting them with experienced gamers in mind. THQ said they wouldn’t change anything about The Burning Earth’s achievements, but they were glad it stirred up a lot of online discussions. Today, the game is highly sought after because of the easy gamerscore increase and goes for over $40 on Amazon.

People obsessed with achievement hunting flocked to the Avatar: The Last Airbender game in order to easily increase their overall gamerscore. Although this probably led to an increase in sales, The Burning Earth’s sequel, Avatar: The Last Airbender – Into the Inferno only released on the Nintendo DS, Wii, and PS2, skipping an Xbox 360 release. Unfortunately for achievement hunters, that extra 1000 gamerscore was a fleeting dream.
