The Legend of Korra ended with Korra and Asami finally becoming a couple, literally going off hand-in-hand. Korra, the lead character, and Asami, her mechanic friend, went from competing over the same guy, to forming a friendship, to finally admitting their feelings for one another.

The Legend of Korra was sort of groundbreaking in the sense that it was one of the first children’s show to feature two bisexual characters and a same-gender relationship. The show recently celebrated its nine-year anniversary, and much of the renewed appreciation of the series is due to these two characters and their relationship.

9 The Aftermath (Season 1, Episode 7)

Korra didn’t initially like Asami, since she was a romantic rival when they first met. She’s less than pleased to be hanging out at Asami’s mansion, but the experience leads to a change in her opinion of the girl. This change occurs when Asami takes Korra out on her racetrack and shows off her driving skills. The girls find out that they have more in common than their taste in guys, such as an enjoyment for adrenaline.

8 A Breath Of Fresh Air (Season 3, Episode 1)

Season three begins with Asami and Korra finally putting Mako behind them. The girls are able to joke about him together and agree that they’re totally over him. As their feelings for Mako are in the past, it seems that the two are closer than ever. After opening the portal to the spirit world in the previous season, Korra is stressed by the fallout of that choice, and frantically trying to set things right. Asami is along for the ride, offering advice and support when Korra needs it. The first hint of a crush appears here when Korra is so busy looking at Asami in the passenger seat that she nearly crashes.

When the gang sets up a stakeout in an attempt to capture Zaheer, Korra is tricked into entering the spirit world. While her mind is away from her body, Zaheer’s henchmen attack, leaving the gang without their strongest weapon.

Asami then takes an unconscious Korra and tries to save her from falling into any danger. The two are captured, but Korrasami shippers were treated with the above image.

5 Long Live The Queen (Season 3, Episode 10)

After being captured by the Earth queen’s men while on the run from Zaheer, Korra and Asami must work together to escape. Asami uses her engineering knowledge, and frees Korra and herself. They end up stranded in the middle of the desert, but Asami’s quick mechanical skills and Korra’s bending work together to get them out of another bind. This episode is another great Korra-Asami team-up that showcases how well they work together as a duo.

4 Venom Of The Red Lotus (Season 3, Episode 13)

The season three finale has Korra going through it like the character never has before. Zaheer has a plan to kill Korra while she’s in the avatar state, thus destroying the avatar line once and for all. Then he and Korra have an epic bending duel that nearly kills Korra. She’s terribly injured, and the poison Zaheer had injected her with has taken its toll both physically and mentally. Korra struggles to recover from the ordeal for a while afterwards, but Asami tends to Korra and treats her gently and offering her unwavering support.

3 Korra Alone (Season 4, Episode 2)

This episode is all about Korra, but features a detail that really helps move the Korra-and-Asami relationship along, even as season four separates them for six episodes. After the ordeal with Zaheer, Korra feels that she needs time alone to recover. Asami offers to accompany her, but Korra declines, feeling that this is something she needs to figure out for herself. As the episode shows Korra struggling to regain her strength and confidence, and dealing with PTSD, it’s revealed that, while she lost contact with everyone else in her life, Korra continued to keep in touch with Asami by letter.

There’s tension between Korra and Asami, as Asami reveals that she was hurt by the length of Korra’s absence.

1 The Last Stand (Season 4, Episode 13)

With all the major drama and conflict finally behind them in the season finale, Asami and Korra can focus on exploring their feelings for one another. Asami confesses to Korra that she couldn’t bear to lose her, and Korra apologizes for her earlier absence. They agree to go on a vacation together in the spirit world, and enter the portal hand-in-hand. It’s a beautiful ending for both characters and the series as a whole, and it’s followed up in a sweet comic detailing the two’s official romantic relationship.
