Azula’s former sidekicks Mai and Ty Lee switched sides towards the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender, but their stories didn’t end there. Both Mai and Ty Lee also appeared in the Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel comics, which take place in the years immediately following the end of the Hundred Year War.

Azula, Mai and Ty Lee met at the Royal Fire Academy for Girls and became fierce friends, with Azula stepping into place as the ringleader of the group. While Azula was the only member of Fire Nation royalty, her friends also hailed from nobility. Mai was the daughter of Ukano, who became the Governor of New Ozai, and her uncle was the warden of the Boiling Rock, the Fire Nation’s infamous prison. Meanwhile, Ty Lee was one of a set of seven identical sisters, and originally ran away with the circus to seek out her own individuality.

Mai’s deadpan demeanor and bleak outlook made her the perfect romantic fit for Azula’s brother, the moody Prince Zuko. It wasn’t an easy romance, however; when he switched over to Team Avatar, Zuko broke the news to Mai in a note, and he later betrayed her again by locking her in a prison cell on the Boiling Rock. Despite this, both Ty Lee and Mai still helped Zuko and Team Avatar to escape the Boiling Rock, at the cost of their own freedom. At the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the two friends were released from prison following Fire Lord Ozai’s defeat. Here’s what happened to them next.

Mai Breaks Up With Zuko

Though Zuko and Mai rekindled their love at the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender, it wasn’t long before Zuko’s bad boyfriend habits put their relationship on the rocks again. Mai was angered when he ran off on a mission without bothering to tell her, and then further incensed when she found out that he’d been meeting with Ozai in secret to ask for advice. Deciding that she couldn’t be Zuko’s girlfriend so long as he kept putting up walls between them and refusing to confide in her, Mai broke up with him. Zuko rather misguidedly responded by trying to order her to come back using his authority as Fire Lord when she walked away. It did not work.

Mai and Zuko didn’t see each other for some time, and Mai started dating someone new: a young man called Kei Lo. Kei Lo was a member of the New Ozai Society, who were working to remove Zuko from the throne, so Mai initially only led him on in order to gain information about the New Ozai Society’s plans. Her feelings for Kei Lo later became more sincere, but she also reconciled with Zuko after he helped her in the search for her kidnapped little brother, Tom-Tom. In this comic story, “Smoke and Shadow,” Mai was reunited with Azula, who was revealed to be the kidnapper, working together with Mai’s father and the New Ozai Society. The comic ends with Mai and Kei Lo breaking up, but it’s unclear if Mai and Zuko ever got back together. If they did, Mai could be the mother of Zuko’s daughter, Izumi, who succeeded him as Fire Lord.

Ty Lee Stays With The Kyoshi Warriors

After the Hundred Year War, Ty Lee wanted to help the world by using her chi blocking skills as one of the Kyoshi warriors. Along with Suki and the others, she acted in the role of a personal bodyguard to Fire Lord Zuko in the tumultuous early days of his reign. In the comic “Sisters,” Ty Lee was reunited with her six identical sisters – Ty Lin, Ty Lat, Ty Lao, Ty Liu ,Ty Lum and Ty Woo – who had tried to follow her to the circus only to discover that she’d already left. Deciding they liked the circus, they stayed and became a famous acrobatic act called the Flying Ty Sisters.

Ty Lee couldn’t figure out why she felt troubled serving as one of the Kyoshi Warriors until she was reunited with her sisters, and realized that she’d once again become part of a matching set – exactly the life she’d tried to run away from. However, after the Flying Ty Sisters rescued her during a brawl, Ty Lee realized that there were upsides to being part of a team, and happily embraced her life as a Kyoshi Warrior, and had a long career as one of the legendary fighters.
