The Avengers have fought some of the greatest villains in comic books, like Thanos or Kang the Conqueror. Not all of their greatest enemies are men, though. Some of their most challenging foes have been women, and in some cases like the Scarlet Witch, even members of the Avengers themselves.

The Scarlet Witch is just one of the many fascinating and powerful women who have complicated the lives of the Avengers in the comics. Some of them are very likely to do the same in the MCU, especially as the franchise continues to branch out in new directions. A few of them are already active in the MCU, waiting for their moment to shine.

10 Doctor Spectrum

Doctor Spectrum has been a few different people in Marvel Comics. One of the most compelling and powerful versions was an Avenger – Janet Van Dyne. Comic book fans know that Janet Van Dyne is the Wasp, but for a brief moment in AvengersAnnual #8, she was possessed by the Power Prism. She gained extraordinary powers as a result, including the knowledge of Krinnon, the alien being who inhabits the Prism. Doctor Spectrum can also generate powerful energy blasts, become intangible, and fly through space without a need for a spacesuit.

9 Moonstone

Moonstone could be the villain actress Zawe Ashton is playing in The Marvels, and she would be a great choice as she is a significant Avengers antagonist. She can fly, manipulate molecules, and fire devastating photon blasts. She’s also a master of deception, as she impersonated Carol Danvers in her Ms. Marvel persona for a long time, leading to a major conflict between them which could manifest in the MCU. Moonstone has been part of the Masters of Evil and the Thunderbolts, and could easily join the roster of either of those teams in live-action.

8 Proxima Midnight

Proxima Midnight has already appeared in the MCU as a member of Thanos’ Black Order. She has been a powerful nemesis of the Avengers in the comics from her debut. She has super strength, stamina, and speed, making her a challenge for any of the Avengers. She also wields a very powerful spear that was forged in a star. Proxima Midnight can kill or permanently injure virtually anyone with the spear, even some of the most powerful Avengers, and in one battle she was able to instantly transform the Hulk back into his human form with a single strike.

7 Terminatrix

Comic books fans know that Ravonna Renslayer is a major aspect of Kang the Conqueror’s story. She has also been a major thorn in the side of the Avengers at various points, especially in the persona of the Terminatrix. Though she has no powers, she has relentless ambition. She sought revenge against Kang and threatened time and space to penetrate his temporal empire of Chronopolis to do it. She also impersonated the character of Nebula and manipulated the Avengers and Doctor Druid in particular in an attempt to get access to a powerful weapon that would help her destroy Kang.

6 Nebula

The real Nebula is a major foe of the Avengers herself. Though fans know her as something of an anti-hero in the MCU, for a long time she was a mercenary and pirate in the Marvel Universe. With her ability to regenerate and bionic enhancements, she is one of the most challenging enemies of the Avengers.

She is supremely tenacious, as the Avengers found in The Infinity Gauntlet comic book series when she usurped the gauntlet from Thanos for a brief moment. She has also acquired enormous cosmic power like the Infinity Union and would have destroyed the universe if not for the Avengers.

5 Madame Masque

Madame Masque is one of the best martial artists in Marvel Comics. She is also a highly trained assassin who has plagued the Avengers on numerous occasions, including as a part of the Masters of Evil. She wears highly advanced armor including a distinctive golden mask which is essentially invulnerable to most forms of physical attack. Comic fans know one of her many aliases is Whitney Frost, who has appeared in live-action as the villain of the second season of the Agent Carter television series.

4 The Enchantress

The Enchantress is one of the biggest Avengers villains in the comics, and now she exists in a way in the MCU thanks to Sylvie from Loki. Sylvie has the potential to embody some of Amora’s power and potential in the MCU. A powerful sorceress, Amora has the mystical power to enchant and deceive, which she has used against the Avengers as a founding member of the Masters Of Evil. She has also taken on individual members of the team, especially Thor, and has been successful on occasion in using her powers against the God of Thunder.

3 Morgan Le Fay

Morgan le Fay is one of the most powerful witches in Marvel Comics. She can control minds and alter reality, on such a scale that she once completely revised reality to resemble the Middle Ages. She transformed the Avengers into Medieval versions of themselves in some of the best Avengers issues of the late ’90s.

As the Queen of Otherworld, she also plays a significant role in the greater Marvel multiverse. She has a direct connection to the Captain Britain Corps, a multiversal defense force that is very likely to appear in the MCU in some way thanks to the presence of Captain Carter.

2 Mystique

Mystique may not be the most powerful of Avengers villains, but her shapeshifting ability makes her one of their biggest threats. She has taken the team on directly on numerous occasions, including as the leader of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Her engagement with the Avengers led to Rogue accidentally acquiring the powers of Carol Danvers. More recently, Mystique is one of the suspects in the murder of the Scarlet Witch. If she did kill Wanda, then she has delivered one of the most brutal blows against the Avengers that the team has ever suffered.

1 The Scarlet Witch

The Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful and important Avengers both in the comics and in the MCU. She has also been one of their biggest threats. On several occasions, she has turned against the team. One of the most dramatic and consequential was Avengers Disassembled in the early 2000s when she lashed out at the team and contributed to the death of Hawkeye. She also altered reality in the House Of M and erased the majority of mutants from existence, an act that has led to major conflicts between the Avengers and X-Men in the years since.
