Gwyneth Paltrow seems to have revealed Pepper Potts is indeed pregnant with Tony Stark’s child in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4. The relationship between the two characters has been one of the longest-running threads in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, dating back to their initial appearances in the original Iron Man 10 years ago. While Tony and Pepper apparently hit a rough patch over the past decade (as evidenced in Captain America: Civil War), they’re in a much better place now. The couple is currently engaged, though Tony’s attempts to save the universe in Infinity War thwarted any progress on their wedding plans.

During their one scene together in Avengers 3, Tony detailed a nightmare he had about Pepper being pregnant, but she assured him there was no child on the way. Savvy viewers interpreted this exchange as a bit of foreshadowing for a twist being saved for Avengers 4. If Marvel was trying to keep this information under wraps, it appears Paltrow beat them to the punch a year out.

Twitter user ashley_renae shared a page from the official Infinity War magazine that featured a snippet of an interview with Paltrow. When asked about Tony and Pepper’s relationship, the actress chronicled their full arc together, including them becoming parents. Screen Rant has reached out to Titan (the publisher of the magazine) for comment and will update accordingly. Read Paltrow’s quote in the space below:

“Pepper and Tony have had a really long journey together. She obviously starts as his dutiful assistant, and then the relationship evolves, and now this decade later they’re married, and they have a child. Their relationship has evolved in all of the ways that great romances evolve.”

While it’s shocking for this to be unveiled in an official Marvel publication (Paltrow looks to be someone Marvel has to keep a close eye on), the notion of Pepper being pregnant isn’t that farfetched. The aforementioned sequence in Infinity War all but spelled it out for the audience, indicating this is where the filmmakers wanted to take the Tony/Pepper dynamic. For his part, Stark has acted as a paternal figure for Peter Parker in the MCU, so perhaps his experience there made him want to have a child of his own. Over the course of his appearances, Tony has changed from a carefree playboy to a person who is more mature and responsible. There’s been real growth there from his days in the “funvee,” and there are few better ways to cement that arc than to have Tony enter the realm of fatherhood, settling down with a family.

Of course, it’s no guarantee Tony is going to be around to raise his offspring. Fans have long speculated Iron Man is going to be one of the characters who permanently dies before the battle against Thanos is over. Giving Tony an unborn child would certainly make his death scene more emotional, although some would argue Marvel wouldn’t have to go to that extreme in order to make Iron Man’s sacrifice heartbreaking. It’s also possible that Tony survives the final battle, with Robert Downey, Jr. then moving to the sidelines for Phase 4 and beyond. That would give Tony and Pepper the happy ending they deserve, so it’ll be interesting to see what happens.
