Marvel Studios may be planning on introducing several Avengers teams in Phase 4. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is currently in a transition period following the end of the Infinity Saga via Avengers: Endgame. As it rebuilds itself moving forward, one important thing is still unclear – the identities of the official members of the new Avengers team.

The 2019 Joe and Anthony Russo-directed Avengers: Endgame also served as the swan song for some of the franchise’s founding heroes in Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), and Captain America (Chris Evans). This leaves only three original Avengers members who are still in the franchise: Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Second-generation heroes such as Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie), and Spider-Man (Tom Holland) are stepping up to take leadership roles. Meanwhile, Marvel Studios are continuously introducing new faces into the MCU such as Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), the Eternals, and many more to come. Still, everyone seems to be busy minding their respective problems, with no clear coordination among them. While this setup seems to work well now, a new Avengers team will inevitably be assembled, especially if Marvel Studios is once again building towards an overarching villain as they did in the Infinity Saga with Thanos (Josh Brolin).

Changing the guards in the Avengers can relatively be easy; Marvel Studios can replace Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America with new members to join Thor, Hulk, and Hawkeye. They can also expand the roster by bringing in new heroes. But based on how the MCU’s future appears to be shaping up, it seems like the franchise isn’t simply trying to rebuild the old team. Instead, they could be introducing multiple Avengers lineup.

Main Avengers Team

Presumably led by the new Captain America, Sam Wilson, MCU’s next main Avengers team could focus on staying true to their moniker: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. It means that this particular selection of heroes is mostly Earth-bound, with the addition of typically cosmic characters who have personal ties to the planet like Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Thor and Mighty Thor (Jane Foster). As this could be the direct replacement for the original Avengers line-up, founding members such as Hulk and Hawkeye could be involved, as well as, veteran hero, War Machine (Don Cheadle), the new Black Panther, Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly). Given Sam’s relationship with Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), the former Winter Soldier can also be recruited to join this gang. Instead of fighting extraterrestrial and interdimensional bad guys, this new Avengers lineup could be primarily focused on street-level villains like Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio), who was recently introduced in the Disney+ series, Hawkeye, or the Ten Rings. The main Avengers team can bring in Spider-Man, depending on Peter Parker’s status on the heels of the game-changing events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Finally, as one of the most important players in the defeat of Thanos, Doctor Strange could ultimately join this line-up too.

Doctor Strange’s Team

While Doctor Strange can play a big role in the main Avengers team, there’s a possibility that he leads his own squad of magic users, as well. Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see him delve deeper into the multiverse as it threatens to collapse following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Alongside the wizard is his trusted ally and current MCU Sorcerer Supreme, Wong (Benedict Wong), who has been with him since starting his heroic journey in the original Doctor Strange film. The upcoming sequel will also see him teaming up with Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen); she has recently assumed her persona as the Scarlet Witch as seen in WandaVision. The trio will have a younger companion in America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), who is set to debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Finally, the magical Avengers team could include Shang-Chi as well, considering how Wong recruited him in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings‘ post-credits scene.

New Avengers

A separate Avengers line-up could also form with entirely new characters. While Avengers: Endgame saw several key heroes leaving the franchise, there won’t be a scarcity of heroes in the MCU as Marvel Studios has a slate of new heroes to debut in the next few years. Chloé Zhao’s Eternals not only introduced the titular cosmic heroes but also laid the groundwork for the proper arrival of Black Knight, who’s currently only known as Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) and Blade/Eric Brooks (Mahershala Ali). The connection between the pair has already been established so it’s safe to say that their journeys will somehow be tied together. Meanwhile, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will reportedly see the launch of Namor the Submariner, supposedly played by Tenoch Huerta. Finally, Reed Richards will soon enter the MCU through Jon Watts’ Fantastic Four film alongside the rest of the Marvel first family, but he could team up with other fresh faces in the franchise.

Ultimates

In the comics, the Avengers took a different name as the Ultimates. Looking at the current roster of superheroes in the MCU, Marvel Studios could be building towards the 616-Universe iteration of the said team. Led by Captain Marvel, their primary mission is to proactively look for potential threats before they could even affect Earth. Monica Rambeau/Spectrum (Teyonah Parris) is part of the team in print; since she’s set up to collaborate with Carol Danvers and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) in Nia DaCosta’s The Marvels, recruiting her for the Ultimates would be fairly easy. Meanwhile. Black Panther and America Chavez were also involved in this endeavor. It won’t even be surprising if Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson) current secret project in space has something to do with this new team.

Infinity Watch

Director James Gunn has been forthcoming about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 being the final adventure for the original Guardians of the Galaxy roster. But given their popularity, it seems likely that it won’t be the end of the gang’s journey in the MCU. Instead, it will only evolve into a brand new team with a mix of old and new members. There’s a possibility that the soon-to-debut Adam Warlock (Will Poulter) will take the leadership role in this new phase for the rag-tag team. Assuming that this is be the case, Marvel Studios could eventually rebrand the Guardians of the Galaxy as some variation of the Infinity Watch from the comics. Joining Warlock in the roster based on the source material are Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and the recently-introduced Pip the Troll (Patton Oswald). Drax was part of the lineup in print, but since Dave Bautista is also gearing up to retire his MCU role, he may not be a part of this new selection. In any case, Marvel Studios could take some liberties in who else could join the next hero line-up for Guardians of the Galaxy.

Young Avengers

Finally, the Avengers team that Marvel Studios is clearly setting up is the Young Avengers. At the time of writing, almost every single MCU Phase 4 project has introduced a member of this team. Kate Bishop/Hawkeye (Hailee Steinfeld), Elijah Bradley/Patriot (Elijah Richardson), and Kid Loki (Jack Veal) were debuted in Hawkeye, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and Loki respectively. WandaVision introduced Billy/Wiccan (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy/Speed (Jett Klyne). Marvel Studios are set to introduce other members of the Young Avengers such as Cassie Lang/Stature (Kathryn Newton), Riri Williams/Ironheart (Dominique Thorne), and America Chavez.
