Avengers: Endgame Concept Art Reveals Comics Accurate Ronin Costume

New concept art from Wesley Burt shows what Ronin’s costume might have looked like in Avengers: Endgame. Endgame premiered in mid-2019 as part of Marvel’s Phase 3, setting the stage for the studio’s current Phase 4 and wrapping up the Infinity Stones storyline that had been set in motion years prior.

One of the many characters that appeared in Avengers: Endgame was Hawkeye. However, after his family is supposedly killed after Thanos’ snap, viewers get to briefly see him on a murderous rampage in Japan. While it’s never explicitly mentioned in the film, the comics show that Hawkeye has adopted a new identity of Ronin. During Clint Barton’s time as Ronin, he transforms from a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent into someone similar to the Punisher, who is quite literally dead-set on dealing out vigilante justice to criminals.

Wesley Burt—who worked at Marvel in Visual Development in 2016—has shared some Ronin designs on Twitter that he’d previously developed. The images show Ronin holding two bladed weapons in each hand. He wears a full-body black costume with gold accents at the shoulders, waist, and knees. Burt’s photos also show a hood that appears to be removable and covers the entire face, other than the eyes. Burt writes in the ensuing Twitter thread that the design was specifically created to pay homage to the character’s original costumes, which were dreamed up by artists such as David Finch and Joe Quesada. Funnily enough, Burt also reveals that his time with Marvel’s Visual Development meant that he actually learned about key Avengers: Endgame details back in 2016. Burt writes in his accompanying caption that he was told about both Thanos’ snap and the time jump on a briefing when he began working on Ronin’s design. Although that’s quite the secret to carry around for three years, Burt managed to keep the information under lock and key, despite a flurry of questions and speculation leading up to the premiere of Avengers: Endgame.

All in all, Avengers: Endgame was a masterpiece that paid tribute to the dozens of stories that had been told up to that point. However, some fans were disappointed by Clint’s brief appearance as Ronin, especially as Avengers: Endgame didn’t dive into Clint’s backstory as much as it could have. Still, Clint’s survival means that there are further chances for Ronin to resurface in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As such, perhaps viewers will have a chance to see more of the fruit of Burt’s labors in the future, if Marvel ever decides that Clint Barton as Ronin deserves his time in the spotlight.
