Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame actor Ross Marquand teases how Red Skull can return to the MCU.  Introduced in Captain America: The First Avenger as the film’s main antagonist, Johann Schmidt is a former head of HYDRA who was previously played by Hugo Weaving. He transformed into the said villain after haphazardly taking an imperfect version of the Super Soldier serum in the hopes of becoming physically enhanced like Steve Rogers.

Red Skull is known to be the first to pursue an Infinity Stone – the Tesseract, which was later revealed as the Space Stone in the MCU. His greed, however, punished him by sending him to Vormir where he became the gatekeeper of the Soul Stone. Though this information wasn’t known until the events of Infinity War. Now that the franchise is seemingly done with Infinity Stones, is there any chance that fans will again see Red Skull moving forward? Marquand doesn’t confirm anything, but he has some ideas as to how it could be done.

Speaking with Nerd4Life, Marquand was asked about the future of Red Skull in the MCU, and he floated some ideas as to how he can factor in the franchise again. It’s worth noting that this is not a confirmation on his end, but merely a possible way to bring him back moving forward.

“[Directors Anthony and Joe Russo] stated as soon as the Red Skull is launched of the Soul Stone, as soon as Thanos will get it after which as soon as Hawkeye will get it, he is primarily free. But when we give it some thought, there’s all these completely different multiverses now. So in a single multiverse, when Thanos frees him, he is free. I’d think about the very first thing he would do if he nonetheless has a vendetta, or if any a part of him nonetheless has ambition, would return to Earth…

“I feel Red Skull might actually transfer into that territory, the place he’s simply a informal observer of the world, and the celestial our bodies of your entire universe, and he solely intervenes when he is completely wanted. However that’ll be attention-grabbing if he is gonna be a drive of fine or evil.”

Another pressing question regarding Red Skull surrounds his supposed later encounter with Captain America. At the end of Endgame, Steve Rogers was tasked to return all Infinity Stones to their original locations, including the Soul Stone. Specifics about how he’s able to do this and what went down between him and Red Skull remain unclear, although since he’s able to live a full life with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), it’s safe to assume that he was able to accomplish his goal. It’s curious if Marvel Studios will ever reveal what exactly happened during Steve’s final mission, which might give fans a better understanding of what’s Red Skull’s future could be.

In the primary MCU timeline where the Soul Stone was not returned to Vormir, but was destroyed with the rest of the Infinity Stones instead, Red Skull is more likely free to roam. That’s where Marquand’s suggestions can come into play. Whether or not this will be the case remains to be seen, but as with Marvel Studios, if they want him to be involved in certain stories post-Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, they’ll be able to find a way to do so.
