The Bachelor season 23 winner Cassie Randolph didn’t get any heads-up from her ex-boyfriend Colton Underwood that he was going to come out as a gay man during an interview with ABC’s Good Morning America. In January 2019, Cassie met Colton on The Bachelor and immediately felt a connection with him. At the time, Cassie was a 23-year-old speech pathologist from Huntington Beach, CA and Colton was a 26-year-old former professional football player from Washington, IL. Hannah Godwin received Colton’s first-impression rose, but Cassie became a frontrunner over time.

The stakes were higher than ever when Colton got to the Fantasy Suites portion of The Bachelor since he had been so heavily marketed to viewers as the first-ever “virgin” lead of the show. A huge fuss was made about whether or not Colton would lose his virginity on TV and which woman he’d pick for that special moment. Colton ended his Bachelor journey with Cassie as his girlfriend, but they broke up two years later with Cassie filing a restraining order against Colton for stalking her.

In April 2021, Colton came out as a gay man in an interview with GMA where the stalking charges filed against him by Cassie were never brought up. Now, Cassie has claimed that she learned Colton was gay just like everyone else during his televised interview with Roby Wright. “I found out the same way that everyone else did. I was actually in Mexico on vacation with friends. I found out, I think, through Snapchat on GMA. It was horrible. It was just, like, a shocking kind of feeling,” Cassie explained during a recent interview with Kaitlyn Bristowe’s Off The Vine podcast.

All things considered, Colton didn’t tell Cassie that he was gay, nor that he was about to come out during a landmark interview on broadcast TV. While the whole point of a restraining order is for a stalker to have no access to the person they’ve been pursuing and stay away from them, it’s fair to say that Cassie expected at least a little bit of a heads-up from the ex-boyfriend she met on national TV, dated for two years, and had such a dramatic breakup with. Even if Colton didn’t feel equipped to contact her personally, his team could’ve relayed the information to Cassie that Colton was about to come out as gay to the entire world on GMA.

Generally speaking, Colton’s coming-out journey didn’t consider Cassie’s feelings very much. On one hand, this was all about Colton accepting himself and sharing his truth with the world. Moreover, it’s not like he was required to tell his ex-girlfriend about his sexuality. With that said, considering that they had a very public relationship that ended in a nasty – and highly publicized – breakup, a simple heads-up from Colton to Cassie definitely wouldn’t have hurt.
