A Bachelor Nation fangirl from way back, Serena Pitt recently spoke to Screen Rant about how long she’s been watching the franchise, and what it was like for her on night one. With a show as long-running as The Bachelor, many contestants in recent seasons have grown up watching the franchise. For some, going on the show is a dream come true, but for others, like Serena from Matt James’ season, becoming a contestant was as surreal as it gets.

The fun and bubbly Canadian quickly made an impression on Matt and was chosen for one of the season’s earliest one-on-one dates. It became clear to viewers that Serena and Matt shared a mental and physical bond, and fans weren’t surprised that Serena made it all the way to hometowns. But after an adorable all-things-Canada date and introducing Matt to her family, Serena realized that something was off. She made the decision to break up with Matt and leave the show because ultimately, Matt was not the right one for her.

Family is clearly important to Serena, and it was through them that she got her first taste of The Bachelor franchise. “I grew up watching it with my mom and my sister,” Serena told Screen Rant. “Then when I went off to university, my roommates were fans too. It was kind of one of those things that just followed with me through high school and then university, and then afterwards,” she added. The Bachelor became a staple in her and her friends’ lives, even if it was just on in the background.

Serena started watching the franchise with Ashley Hebert’s season of The Bachelorette, but when it came to the franchise’s leading men, there was one in particular that made an impression on her. “One of the earlier seasons I watched was Ben Higgins’ season, I was probably like 15 or 16. I thought he was so cute, but he was like 15 years older than me,” Serena laughed. The newly-minted reality star may have had a crush on quintessential Bachelor Ben Higgins, but she never considered applying until recently. “I’ve never thought about going on until Matt was announced,” she asserted.

According to Serena, there’s a big difference between being a fan of the show and wanting to go on the show. It was never something that I thought I would apply for, to be clear. I did not see myself ever being on the show,” she said. There was definitely awkwardness involved in dating a man along with over 30 other women, but that was nothing to how surreal night one was for Serena. “It was just weird,” she commented. “I remember pulling up [night] one, and I was like, ‘I’m so excited. But also what am I doing?!’”

Serena may be surprised that she ended up on the show, but viewers are glad she did. She attracted many fans who enjoyed watching her on The Bachelor and found her honesty refreshing. Serena never expected to find herself a part of Bachelor Nation, but now that she’s here, fans are hoping she sticks around. Bachelor in Paradise is a distinct possibility for Serena, and she’s even considered her strategy should she wind up on the beach this summer. A front-and-center spot in Bachelor Nation was unexpected for her, and now, Serena’s officially part of the family.
