Bachelorette season 18 runner-up, Brandon Jones, set the record straight about whether or not he threw the Neil Lane engagement ring intended for Michelle Young off of a cliff after she broke up with him. Brandon and Michelle had a strong connection throughout the season. On their one-on-one date, she brought him to her parents’ house, and he ended up meeting them and even asking for their blessing if he had the chance to propose. As the weeks progressed, they had a successful hometown date with Brandon’s family and a romantic overnight date in the fantasy suite. Brandon confessed that he was in love with Michelle. She said that she loved him too, and it appeared that Brandon was going to receive her final rose.

However, on the final episode of the season, Michelle did not choose Brandon. Instead, she accepted a proposal from Nayte Olukoya, and they are very much in love. When Michelle broke up with Brandon, he was distraught and blindsided. He became very emotional, crying privately as he wondered when everything went wrong. During this moment, Brandon threw something off of a cliff, leaving many Bachelor Nation fans to wonder if it was the engagement ring. In that intense moment, it seemed plausible that Brandon would have let his emotions take over.

However, in an interview with Kaitlyn Bristowe on her Off the Vine podcast, Brandon revealed that it was not the ring that he tossed off of the cliff. He laughed as he announced, “Everyone, I didn’t throw the ring!” He explained the “whole backstory” of the situation, stating that he liked to keep a snack with him during the rose ceremonies to enjoy like an athlete would after a game. Brandon said, “Since day one, I always kept a bag of Welch’s in my pocket, and then just whenever I got a rose, I would eat the bag of Welch’s, and be like, ‘Yo, that’s my after game snack.'” As he continued to receive group date roses from Michelle, he realized, “Wow! These are the luckiest bag of Welch’s,” and always kept the fruit snacks with him. Everyone knew that Brandon always had them if someone was hungry and wanted to share a snack, including Michelle.

When they arrived in Mexico to film the end of the season, Brandon found a box of Welch’s, and put a bag in his pocket right before he got out of the car. When Michelle broke up with him, and his luck finally ran out, he threw the bag of Welch’s off of a cliff because he was so upset. The audio and camera people thought he threw the ring, and Brandon laughed as he explained that while he was crying, he misunderstood and couldn’t understand why they were so upset about a bag of Welch’s. Kaitlyn said that she also thought that he threw the ring because she saw him throw something as she was getting her makeup redone because she was crying so much about the break up. She said that she was going to go down to the beach and search for it. Brandon chuckled about the memes that people made after the episode aired that showed him throwing the ring, with people with metal detectors searching for it on the beach. Kaitlyn and Brandon also joked that Welch’s should give Brandon a brand deal.

Brandon’s experience on The Bachelorette did not end the way he expected it to, but it is nice to see that he is ready to laugh about parts of it. Fans now know that it wasn’t the ring that went over the cliff, but Welch’s fruit snacks. Although it has a funny backstory, this moment certainly created one of the most dramatic moments in Bachelorette history.
