Bachelorette fans watched in disbelief as Chris Sutton crashed Michelle Young’s date with Nayte Olukoya because he felt that Nayte was not there for the right reasons, but Chris recently revealed that his actual motive didn’t have much to do with Nayte at all. Chris was upset when Nayte reacted to not getting a one-on-one date by saying that it would eventually happen because he was “in a good spot regardless” with Michelle. Chris interpreted this as Nayte acting “really cocky” like “he’s got everything in the bag.” At the group date, Michelle felt “unseen” when the guys didn’t make an effort to spend time with her. Chris attributed this to the fact that some guys, specifically Nayte, were overly confident, and interrupted Michelle’s toast at the cocktail party to let everyone know his thoughts. During their private time, he told Michelle about Nayte’s comments, which led Michelle to ask Nayte about it and then to a confrontation between the two men.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Chris continued this behavior on episode 5 during the group date. He was offended when Michelle didn’t spend any one-on-one time with him, but he didn’t initiate it either. When Michelle chose Nayte for one of the two one-on-one dates, Chris crashed the date to speak to Michelle. He said that he felt “really played by the whole situation” because she continued to give Nayte attention after his warnings about him. Michelle said that she wants to be able to make decisions for herself and didn’t see the relationship progressing, and walked Chris out. The show juxtaposed footage of Chris looking dejected in the limousine with Michelle and Nayte kissing in front of a fireworks show, leaving viewers with the impression that the story was Chris vs. Nayte, and Nayte won.

However, on the Click Bait podcast with Joe Amabile and Tia Booth, Chris revealed that his reason for showing up at Michelle and Nayte’s date was not completely about Nayte at all. He said that he actually wanted to talk to Michelle about how their relationship wasn’t progressing. Chris said, “obviously she probably thought I wasn’t right for her. I was kind of feeling the same thing.” He thought that, with the way the Rose Ceremonies work, that he might not get a chance to speak to her, to tell her “I just want the best for you, and obviously you may not think this is right for us.  I may feel the same way, and kinda tell her how I felt and be on my way and I didn’t think I would, you know, get that chance.” Joe explained to him that he would probably get backlash for not attending the Rose Ceremony to face the rejection there. Chris laughed and rolled his eyes at that comment, but said, “Right.”

Tia asked Chris if he had a problem with Nayte specifically, to which Chris responded, “Well, actually not really anything specifically with Nayte. I just kind of wanted to say my piece and kinda be on my way.” He admitted that he thought Michelle was going to send him home because they had no spark. He wanted to express that he wished the best for Michelle and there was “no bad beef.” He said that he wanted to tell her that he was genuine, hear where she stood, and then leave. He confessed that he didn’t get to say everything he wanted to say, but he knew that they weren’t right for each other. This interpretation of the events is different from how the show presented it as a contest between Chris and Nayte.

It is always interesting to hear from Bachelor Nation stars after the shows air because they often have a different interpretation of the events from how the show presents them. Chris’ assertion that his actions had less to do with Nayte than with the fact that he felt no chemistry with Michelle contradicts what viewers saw on both episodes. Fans will have to judge whether Chris is backtracking on his comments and actions, and reframing them in a narrative to save his reputation.
