The finale of The Bachelorette answered many questions for fans: Can Tayshia Adams get past Ben Smith’s inability to communicate his feelings in the moment? No. Will she accept a proposal at the end of the season? Yes, to Zac Clark. But there’s one scene that left many fans confused as to what took place behind closed doors.

Ivan Hall advanced to fantasy suites but was left stunned when Tayshia dumped him before the final three rose ceremony. There were initially two men awaiting Tayshia’s rose, after Brendan Morais left right before the fantasy suite, explaining that not enough time had elapsed since his divorce. Everything appeared to be going smoothly with Tayshia and Ivan, even if it appeared on screen that she was more into Zac, her eventual fiancé. When Tayshia pulled Ivan aside to chat before she started handing out the roses (usually not a good sign), it was clear something was up. The conversation, at least what the part that viewers were privy to, was vague. We know there was a discussion about religion, and that Tayshia, who said faith is important to her, felt she and Ivan were on different pages when it came to their religious beliefs.

After the finale, Ivan cleared up some of the uncertainty regarding what caused the rift between him and Tayshia. Ivan opened up on Caila Quinn’s Instagram story about his beliefs. He said, “She only wants to date a Christian and I’m not religious. I’m open to and have dated any religion.” On Kaitlyn Bristowe’s Off the Vine podcast, Ivan revealed, “I kind of explained to Tayshia, ‘Listen, I’m agnostic,’ and being agnostic is, a lot of people confuse it for being atheist, which is not what I am. Atheist is taking a hard stance that there is no God, and that’s not what I believe at all. It’s completely different things, but everybody confuses it. Agnostic is strictly saying, ‘I don’t know.'”

Ivan said he was open to Tayshia taking their future children to church but that he was firm on his stance that he doesn’t know if there is a Heaven and Hell. He revealed that Tayshia asked him detailed questions about what he believed and didn’t during their night in the fantasy suite, and clearly the answers weren’t satisfactory enough for The Bachelorette.

Conversations about religious beliefs rarely get shown on the show, and reasons why certain contestants don’t advance as far as others can have to do with conversations about sensitive topics that aren’t shown to the audience. While Ivan and Tayshia seemed like a good fit, it could be that Tayshia was simply into Zac more than any other of the remaining men and was looking for a reason to ditch Ivan. If Ivan is still single around this time next year, it shouldn’t be out of the question for him to be the next lead of The Bachelor, following Matt James.
