Unlike Bachelor Nation, Katie Thurston wasn’t surprised by Justin Glaze’s emotional exit on The Bachelorette finale. While it didn’t seem like Justin and Katie had a strong connection, the former couple had a bond that wasn’t displayed on the show as much as the others. Week after week, Justin managed to stay in the competition, much to the viewers’ surprise. However, they did not mind as Justin was always offering the most hilarious and candid facial expressions.

After Greg self-eliminated himself following a blowout fight with Katie, she realized who her final one would be and knew Justin wasn’t the love of her life. Before Justin could pick out a ring and propose to her, the 30-year-old decided to send him home before the final rose ceremony. While Justin was upset at first, he now realizes it was the best decision for both him and Katie.

The former Bachelorette sat down with Us Weekly and spoke about Justin’s emotional exit earlier this week. While the viewers were shocked, Katie wasn’t. “I’m not surprised he was blindsided, just because of what him and I experienced,” the 30-year-old revealed. “Unfortunately, there is a whole love story you guys didn’t get to see […] we know what was there and what we were able to take away from it.” The former bank marketing manager sent the 27-year-old home after confessing her love to Blake Moynes, with whom she got engaged at the end. Justin was shocked by the outcome as he thought he and Katie really had something special.

We’ve spent a month together, getting to know each other, talking about our families,” he said to the cameras after Katie broke up with him. “This morning I’m picturing how great today’s going to be and what our life is gonna look like […] You don’t want it to end […] It hurts, man. I gave this everything. I feel a lot of emotions.” Justin’s departure came shortly after two of Katie’s men dropped out of the show: Michael Allio and Greg Grippo. Many fans believed Justin made it to the final two because there were only two suitors left, a notion Katie denied on the After The Final Rose special. “We actually remain on great speaking terms today,” Katie said of her current relationship with Justin. “I will say you definitely missed out on learning more about this great guy.”

Even though the viewers didn’t get to see the depth of Katie and Justin’s relationship on The Bachelorette, his reaction said it all. Katie may have had a deeper connection with Blake or even Greg, but that doesn’t take away the love she and Justin shared. While it didn’t work out with Katie, maybe Justin can find love as The Bachelor in the new year.
