Katie Thurston doesn’t regret sending current boyfriend John Hersey home during the second week of The Bachelorette because, according to her, their relationship “would have never worked on TV.” When Katie and John revealed that they’re an item a mere month after her engagement to Blake Moynes ended, much of Bachelor Nation wondered one thing – why didn’t she keep John around longer if they were such a good match for each other? In a brief Q&A on social media, Katie shared a response to this common question.

On the finale of The Bachelorette season 17, Katie wrapped up her journey in New Mexico engaged to Blake. However, at the end of October, the pair released a joint statement explaining that they decided to go their separate ways. Both during and after her relationship with Blake, John was a permanent staple on Katie’s Instagram. Her followers thought it was strange that she was spending so much time with an early eliminee from her season, but she kept stressing they were just friends. A few weeks later, that platonic friendship evolved into a romantic one, and now Katie and John are attending red carpet events and going on sweet ice skating dates together.

Many fans are in agreement that her chemistry with John appears to be much stronger than with Blake. So why was John forced to pack his bags so soon? On her Instagram Story, Katie provided an answer. In response to a follower’s comment that read, “I love this for you!!!! I don’t know why they never showed too much screen time between the two of you,” Katie said, “It never would have worked on TV. We had 6+ months of a friendship that showed me who he is as a person.” Katie also clapped back at a follower who said, “Why are you trying so hard to convince us?” In response, Katie said, “I think it’s called the honeymoon stage, sorry not sorry.”

Additionally, Katie addressed the speculation that she cheated on Blake with John, who was consistently featured on her social media throughout her short engagement to the Canadian wildlife manager. In response to the question, “So did you fall in love before or after your engagement was called off!?!?,” Katie said, “Always loved him as my best friend. Then one day I looked at him and saw him differently. Like Cupid to the heart, I knew I was hit.” John previously issued a statement regarding this speculation. He said, “We were ALWAYS platonic…it was never a thought in our minds that we would ever be anything more.”

John also admitted that the timeline of their relationship was “fast and messy” and the speed at which he fell for Katie “was honestly terrifying.” Yet based on the ear-to-ear smiles seen on their recent outings, it’s so far working out better than either could’ve anticipated. Fans can’t wait to see what the future has in store for John and Katie, who is one of the few recent leads of The Bachelorette to be in a committed relationship. While her and John’s love story is an unorthodox one for the franchise, it’s nice to see some happiness stem from it.
