Bachelorette: Mike the Virgin Claims He’s Not That Innocent

Known for his innocence throughout his time on The Bachelorette, Mike Planeta shared honest answers about his sexual experiences and his faith. Faced with the challenge of dating Katie alongside his conservative Christian values, Mike has become the new Colton of Bachelor Nation, known for his virginity and supposed lack of sexual experience in his dating life. Despite judgment both on his season and from fans, Mike proved time and time again to not only show respect for Katie throughout the season but to impress her when other contestants tried to use crude gags to win over Katie. The Bachelorette‘s Mike may be a virgin, yet has done so in a way that is purposeful, authentic, and unfocused on drama. 

Attending Point Loma Nazarene University, a Christian university in San Diego, California, it was no surprise to discover Mike’s shock at the scandalous group dates and one on one’s featured on Katie’s season, including performances about the contestant’s sexual performances and even Tantric yoga. Despite his discomfort, Mike was dedicated to the process from day one and made the most of his time with Katie, fully participating in each and every date to the best of his ability. Mike has added another buzz-worthy component to the series, with the already growing controversy surrounding Katie this season. 

In an interview with US Weekly, Mike revealed the long-awaited truth behind his views of sexuality. After expressing his virginity in the series, Mike shared how he too has struggled to maintain his virginity and “urges.” In his own words, he expressed how he is not “some perfect little golden boy” and “extremely flawed.” While his virginity has played a central role in the season, Mike explained that he “may not have had sex, sex, [he’s] slipped up and had oral sex.” While Mike was timid on-screen, he used his platform with the magazine to explore his trials as a Christian and how he has learned a great deal about himself throughout his experiences dating, including his time with Katie on The Bachelorette. 

While other proclaimed virgins, such as Colton Underwood, have used the title to make jokes and cause controversy, Mike has used the label to be honest with himself and fans, sharing his learned experiences about life, faith, and sexuality. Mike didn’t claim to be a virgin in order to gain publicity, but rather to begin a conversation about the importance of “convictions.” Self-expressive and brutally honest, Mike opens the floor for more to live their truths and express themselves without shame. 

Katie and Mike’s journey may have ended in heartbreak and without marriage, but the two have shown an excellent example of pursuing love from very different points of view. Katie was known for her vibrator on set and Mike for being the token virgin of the series, yet the two still left respectfully on relatively good terms. Despite fans championing The Bachelorette’s Andrew Spencer as a potential Bachelor, Mike would be an excellent choice for the next Bachelor, a choice that would certainly be well-received by fans, especially after his candor and non-judgmental views of sexuality.
