Back 4 Blood, an upcoming four player co-op from developer Turtle Rock Studios, is set to launch October 12, though it will first have a free open beta period. The spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead, Back 4 Blood made its official debut during the 2020 Game Awards. A closed alpha then took place in the latter half of December, with a free open beta coming ahead of its official release.

The open beta for Back 4 Blood is set to run August 12-16, with an early access to that open beta taking place August 5-9, giving players a taste of what’s to come. The open beta is available in all global regions where the game itself is supported, with locations across North and South America, Europe, and Asia. Those with a beta code will be able to redeem it starting August 2. There is no difference between the early access and the open beta beyond the additional play window, though the open beta itself is available to all interested players, while early access will be much more limited.

Back 4 Blood early access to open beta can be acquired through one of two methods. One is surefire, as anyone who pre-orders the game is guaranteed to be able to jump in August 5. Players can also register for an early access lottery, though these slots are limited. Entering for a chance to win early access is an easy process; those interested can simply visit Back 4 Blood’s official website and providing an email address, country, internet speed and what platform is preferred. Those who gain early access will need to create a WB Games account if they don’t already have one. Players who were invited to Back 4 Blood’s closed alpha will automatically have early access.

What To Expect From Back 4 Blood’s Open Beta

Back 4 Blood’s early access and open beta will give players access to five different Cleaners, or human fighters, to play as while fighting the Ridden. With eight total cleaners confirmed for the game, Back 4 Blood has not specified which five will be in the open beta and which three are reserved for the full launch. Meanwhile, six of the nine Ridden will be playable in the open beta as well. Players in the open beta can also expect two Back 4 Blood co-op PvE missions and two PvP maps, and will have access to the Fort Hope location and all weapons. At this time it’s unclear how many respective missions and maps will be available at launch.

Unlike Back 4 Blood’s closed alpha, which was only available for PC, the open beta will be playable on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC, and will have cross-gen support and cross-play. While there are three editions of the game – standard, deluxe, and ultimate – the purchase of any one of them will qualify players for early access to open beta. As far as Turtle Rock Studios has communicated, this open beta will be Back 4 Blood’s final pre-launch gameplay opportunity.
