Revamped RPG classics Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition, Baldur’s Gate: II Enhanced Edition, Siege of Dragonspear, and Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition have received massive updates out of the blue, adding content, fixing bugs, and even including new voices by Mark Meer of Mass Effect fame. The Baldur’s Gate series are considered to be some of the best Dungeons & Dragons video games of all time, which is why they were revived with their Enhanced edition remasters and, more recently, ported to modern consoles.

Developer Beamdog released remastered versions of Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of Amn last decade to make them compatible with modern PCs and cleaned up the visuals. These Enhanced Editions also included the content from their respective expansions, as well as adding new characters and dungeons. The character class roster from the original Baldur’s Gate was expanded to match that of its sequel, while more party members were added that could be used for evil playthroughs. A new expansion that links the two games called Siege of Dragonspear was also released, and the remasters were later ported to mobile devices and consoles. Beamdog also created an Enhanced Edition of the original Icewind Dale, another classic D&D game from the studio that takes place in the same setting. Icewind Dale Enhanced Edition has a much bigger focus on combat and dungeon exploration than Baldur’s Gate.

Beamdog has announced on Steam that the 2.6 patch for the Baldur’s Gate, Baldur’s Gate II, Siege of Dragonspear, and Icewind Dale Enhanced Editions is live and shared full patch notes. These updates fix a number of issues across the games, as well as adding some new choices for character creation. Players can now select from seven new character voice sets, two of which have been provided by Mark Meer, who voiced the male version of Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect trilogy.

Mark Meer originally voiced two characters for the Enhanced Editions: Alveus Malcanter and Baeloth Barrityl. The main character voices in the Baldur’s Gate games mostly consist of battle cries that are made in combat. In the Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale games, the major NPCs are voiced, as well as some of the party members, but the characters created by the player just have generic commands that they shout in various situations.

These new updates for the Enhanced Editions contain a lot of welcome fixes and updates, especially considering that the games were released several years ago. There are hundreds of bug fixes and minor additions in the Enhanced Editions, but few will be as memorable as adding Mass Effect‘s own captain of the Normandy. Meer also takes part in a number of D&D livestream shows, the most recent of which is The Black Dice Society, so there are few voice actors as familiar with the Forgotten Realms as he is.

Baldur’s Gate I & II Enhanced Editions and Icewind Dale Enhanced Edition are available for PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.
