The Barbarian class from Dungeons & Dragons is now playable in Baldur’s Gate 3, which has drawn a mixed response from fans, many of whom expected one of the other remaining classes to join the game, or for a new level update to be added. Baldur’s Gate 3 now has nine classes, each with its own subclasses that are selected at different levels.

In D&D, the Barbarian can use the Rage ability to weaponize their anger, dealing extra damage to foes in combat. They eschew armor and rely on pure instinct and toughness to see them through in combat. It’s expected that Baldur’s Gate 3 will include all of the classes from the D&D Player’s Handbook at launch. Now that the Barbarian is part of the game, it only leaves the Bard, the Monk, and the Paladin. The Barbarian is the third D&D class to be added in massive post-launch updates, as the Sorcerer class was added to Baldur’s Gate 3, and the Druid was added before that.

Developer Larian Studios held another Panel from Hell for the upcoming update for Baldur’s Gate 3, which is still in Early Access. It was revealed that the Barbarian class is being added in Patch 7, alongside a number of smaller updates, including one that adds improvised weapons to the game. A trailer for the Barbarian has been uploaded to the official Baldur’s Gate 3 Twitter page. The response to the announcement during the Panel from Hell has been mixed, as many fans have been vocal on social media about their disappointment in the Barbarian being the focus of the new update.

A lot of fans expressed disappointment that the Paladin or the Bard aren’t coming in the new patch, as they have lots of interesting abilities and the very nature of the classes offer lots of unique roleplaying opportunities in dialogue. The Bard is a popular request for Baldur’s Gate 3, which might be why it’s being saved. There are also people disappointed that the new patch hasn’t increased the level cap to five. The Early Access version of Baldur’s Gate 3 only goes to level four and many fans were hoping that all of the available classes would get new content through an additional level.

It’s not that the Barbarian is an uninteresting class on its own and there are fans who are expressing joy that the class is now part of Baldur’s Gate 3. It’s more that people had different expectations for the new patch. The fact that Baldur’s Gate 3 has likely been delayed to 2023 means that fans will be waiting longer than expected to access the remaining Player’s Handbook classes in the game. Baldur’s Gate 3 is also missing races from D&D, including the half-orc, which is the race most commonly associated with the Barbarian class. Despite all of these issues, the Barbarian looks like it will be fun for pure melee characters who prefer to punch their way out of situations.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently in development for PC and Google Stadia.
