Batman and Zatanna Are Hiding a Big Secret From the Justice League

Zatanna and Batman have always been close, as their relationship has gone in many different directions in the pages of DC Comics. However, in Batman: Urban Legends #11, it’s revealed the pair have been keeping a big secret from the Justice League for some time. In casting a spell to become closer, they accidentally opened up a curse that must be dealt with every few years.

Batman and Zatanna might be two totally different kinds of heroes in the DC Universe, but their friendship and relationship have brought them close together on several occasions. Bruce Wayne’s stoicism and serious nature often make him put romance on the back burner. The magic-using Zatanna is more playful and isn’t afraid to let her feelings be known. Zatanna and Batman have shared romantic feelings for one another in the comics but have never fully committed to being in a relationship. Now, readers are finding out when the heroes were younger, their attempts to get closer created a dangerous curse.

In the story “Bound to Our Will” in this week’s Batman Urban Legends #11 by Vita Ayala, Nikola Cizmesija, Nick Filardi, and Steve Wands, Superman pulls Batman aside and tells him he’s noticed friction between him and Zatanna. Kal-El says the non-communication is “troubling” since Zatanna leads to the Justice League Dark. He noticed Batman and Zatanna go off together every few years, and when they returned, they couldn’t even look at each other for months. It turns out, Zatanna cast a spell with Bruce when they were younger to unify their thoughts and strengthen their relationship. But the spell created a curse, opening up a crack in the sky that the heroes are forced to deal with every few years.

Zatanna and Batman have an uncomfortable conversation about what they’ve done, as she tells him she found a solution to stop the crack from appearing, but he hadn’t returned her calls. Zatanna reveals they’re tied to the crack, as the connection they forced keeps it open like a doorway – which they need to sever. The comic ends with the pair seemingly sealing off the crack, but with a mysterious villain emerging from it.

Batman and Zatanna’s secret from the Justice League might have just created an even bigger problem. Numerous magic-users from across the world felt the villain’s presence emerging from the crack. So now, it’s up to Batman and Zatanna to finish what they started while potentially saving their fractured relationship at the same time.
