Batman: Arkham Asylum was the beginning of an incredible franchise when it released in 2009. It sold almost two million copies in the first three weeks after its release. With news of Gotham Knights on the horizon, players might want to revisit the older Batman games. Gotham Knights may not be set in the same world as the Batman: Arkham games, but it owes so much to their successful formula.

Unlike later entries in the franchise, Batman: Arkham Asylum is not open world. Instead, players gradually unlock more areas as they progress in the game, in a style similar to what is seen in the Castlevania series or Metroid series. In fact, Metroidvania is a term used for this type of gameplay. Players frequently need to backtrack through certain areas, which means they will revisit previously seen areas, but with new looks or new enemies. As such, there are things that the player may miss, or may decide to do later, (and then forget to go back to). There are still a number of things to do after beating the game, though maybe not as much as later games in the Batman: Arkham series.

Completing the Riddler Challenges in Batman: Arkham Asylum

One of the more prevalent collectibles in Batman: Arkham Asylum is the Riddler Trophies. Players can often see the question mark trophies, but getting to them frequently requires waiting until later in the game to actually collect them because they are in inaccessible areas. This is because as mentioned earlier, players will gradually unlock fancier gadgets, finally allowing them to reach these areas.

In addition to the trophies, there are actual Riddles that the Riddler leaves behind. Sometimes there are question mark alignment puzzles, or sometimes the player is tasked with finding a specific item. Some are very clever, and a real enigma.

There are other collectibles that are still somehow associated with the Riddler, such as the Joker’s Chattering Teeth, the Chronicles of Arkham, and Patient Interview Tapes. As so much of the game requires revisiting previously explored areas, players may miss some of these the first time through.

Collecting all 240 of the Riddler Challenges does have a special reward at the end, but players may be discouraged before then.

Completing Challenge Mode in Batman: Arkham Asylum

There are Combat Challenges that players can complete. They feature different enemies, different stages, and increasingly difficult scenarios. The combat system is great, being one of the more praised systems in the game, as well as one that other games have drawn inspiration from. It makes the fighting feel exciting and is on full display here as players try to get the highest score possible.

There are also the Predator Challenges, which change up pummeling for stealth. Players must take down henchmen as quickly as possible in various ways.

Find the Secret Room in Batman: Arkham Asylum

There is a secret room that is so well hidden that the developers had to announce it after six months of no one finding it. It’s located in the warden’s office and has details of the wardens’ plans for expanding beyond Arkham Asylum. Could it possibly hint at a future game? As it turns out, it did, to the joy of fans everywhere. Not just one, but several games.
