It’s been nearly six years since the release of Batman: Arkham Knight, Rocksteady’s conclusion to its epic Arkham trilogy, and at last fans will finally see a continuation of the series with next year’s Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. For anyone wanting to return to Gotham City, WB Montreal’s Gotham Knights will release later this year.

Nevertheless, that’s still a long time to wait for another DC game, and neither of those games features Batman as a playable character, at least as far as fans are aware. Therefore it’s worth returning to Batman: Arkham Knight, just with a load of epic mods that completely transform the experience.

10 Free-Roam Mod

There are many excellent mods for Batman Arkham Knight, but the Built-In Free Roam Mod is probably the most essential. Certainly, the name doesn’t give away what makes it special, as players can already use Batman to free-roam all of Gotham in the game. This mod, however, allows players to explore the city as every other character in the game.

As long as the DLC is installed, multiple major characters will be added to the menu for free-roam, including Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, Harley Quinn, Azrael, and even The Joker. There’s even a first-person option.

9 All Batmobiles Unlocked

By far the biggest addition in Batman Arkham Knight was the iconic Batmobile, and while it wasn’t warmly received because it had basically been turned into a tank, fans were nevertheless overjoyed when the game’s Season Pass gave owners the chance to drive many popular Batmobiles.

Available skins include the cars from Batman 1989, the ’60s TV series, the Tumbler from The Dark Knight trilogy, and even the one from Batman V Superman. Unfortunately, this DLC is a big cheat, since players can’t use these Batmobiles in the game’s story mode. The “All Batmobiles Unlocked” mod removes that block so you can drive whatever Batmobile you want.

8 The Batman

One of the best things about Batman Arkham Knight is that, as long as players have the Season Pass or the Complete Edition, they can choose to play as pretty much every variety of Batman there has ever been. Bat-suits include everything from his 1939 first appearance to his Batman V Superman outfit, as also seen in the upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

Unfortunately, one suit that is not currently available is the one worn by Robert Pattinson in next year’s The Batman, so it’s a good thing that “The Batman 2022 suit” mod is available to correct this oversight.

7 Batman Returns And The Dark Knight Rises Catwoman

While the Batman Arkham Knight Season Pass gives Batman pretty much every costume he’s ever worn across comics, movies, TV, and video games, the other playable characters get a bit of a cheap deal. Catwoman, for example, was a major part of Batman Arkham City, but her skin set in the sequel is limited to a few options, with none of her movie outfits.

Mods can be used to correct this oversight, including adding Catwoman’s stitched-together Batman Returns costume and the sleeker affair from The Dark Knight Rises. Her subtler outfit from The Batman will probably be available soon too.

6 Complete Visual Overhaul

While Batman Arkham Knight is by no means a bad-looking game, after six years it cannot possibly have the same superior edge that it once did, especially now the new generation of consoles has arrived.

For anyone looking to give the game a graphics boost, there are multiple ReShade-based visual improvement mods out there, but the best is probably the “Complete Visual Overhaul” mod. Post-processing, ambient occlusion, real depth of field effects, color correction, sharpening; these all serve to enhance the experience.

5 The Flash

While Batman is one of the greatest heroes ever, and both his vulnerabilities and his lack of superpowers make him an effective video game protagonist, it’s fun to let loose with an actual metahuman now and again.

To that end, this clever mod adds Central City’s own The Flash as a playable hero in Batman Arkham Knight. A skin mod would be cool enough, but this mod also adds the Flash’s super-speed to the game, so players can run around Gotham faster than the Batmobile and beat up criminals at the speed of light.

4 Classic Skins Pack

One of the best things about Batman Arkham Knight is the vast range of outfit options for Batman to wear, especially if the player has all the DLC. Despite all these many skins, the one thing the game isn’t good at is giving players the chance to customize those skins.

It’s a good thing that there are mods to readdress that balance, and the “Classic Skins Pack” is a great way to quickly add the most iconic color-set for Batman – the blue and grey of the ’60s and ’70s. This mod gives a classic blue and grey paint-job to most skins in the game, including the Batman V Superman suit and even Batgirl’s default outfit.

3 Custom Bat-Signals

The mod scene for Batman Arkham Knight is fantastic, with tweaks and changes to everything from suits, Batmobiles, visuals, and even what hero the player can control. The one thing that fans might be surprised they can mod, however, is Batman’s iconic Bat-signal.

In the Batman Arkham games, the Bat-signal has the practical purpose of highlighting the player’s next objective, and it can indeed be modded. Fans who pick up the “Custom Bat-Signals” mod can change it to a range of different images, including the question mark symbol from the poster of Batman Forever.

2 Joaquin Phoenix Joker

Despite being very dead (the opening scene of the game is his cremation) the Joker still plays a huge part in the plot of Batman Arkham Knight. It’s even possible to play him at certain points in the story, or with the Free-Roam mod. Therefore it’s fun to mod some skins for the Clown Prince of Crime into the game, especially as he doesn’t have any alternate outfits.

One of the more impressive is Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker, but it’s also possible to get Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Cesar Romero, and even a Christmas version.

1 Superman

Every now and again there comes along a mod so impressive it’s impossible not to feel respect for the creator. The Superman mod for Batman Arkham Knight is one such example. While undeniably a little janky in places, such as in the noticeable gap between Superman’s head and neck, it doesn’t take away from the fact that this mod quite simply allows people to play as the Man of Steel in Batman Arkham Knight, including in the story mode.

With a little effort, a dedicated modder can also add powers such as flight, speed, strength, and invulnerability. It’s the definitive Superman videogame experience, and it’s in a Batman game.
