This October looks to be an exciting time for Batman fans, especially for followers of the artist, Chris Samnee. At the start of the month, the Batman Black and White artist kickstarted a challenge dubbed “Batober,” which promises 31 days of Batman art. Samnee has already revealed all the prompts, and there are plenty of great pieces of the Caped Crusader coming this way.

Batman remains a character who thrives in black and white art. Shadows and silhouetted effects on his costume against a gothic background always provide an incredible vibe for his stories. Every few years, skilled artists collaborate on the previously mentioned Batman Black and White series. The comics contain anthological tales of the Dark Knight, his rogues’ gallery, Gotham City, and other adventures. Samnee illustrated the final story in the first issue of the 2013 run called “Head Games.” In the story, Harvey Bullock and Batman track down the Ventriloquist in a Batman: The Animated Series-inspired style. Since Samnee’s work on Black and White, he’s continued to draw comics with critically successful writers, like Image Comics’ Robert Kirkman.

The Batober event promises a number of prompts that have fans eager for their favorite Batman characters or locations. Samnee is getting creative with the prompts too. For example, for the “spotlight” prompt, Batman is inclining on the Bat-Signal with an unconscious criminal as Commissioner Gordon stares in awe. Samnee’s final prompt: “team,” will likely have the Bat-Family in an epic piece to wrap Batober up. It’s interesting to theorize which of Batman’s allies he’ll include. Perhaps the final composition will be a Halloween-inspired one.

Speaking of Halloween, it’s likely Samnee will incorporate fan-favorite moments from Batman’s Halloween stories. Whether it be Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s iconic The Long Halloween or the Scarecrow-focused video game Arkham Knight, Batman is a superhero who perfectly fits the spooky season. In The Long Halloween, Batman is placed directly in the center of a mob war while hunting the mysterious killer known as Holiday. The Long Halloween stands as one of the most exceptional Batman tales of all time. The Halloween theme continues for the Caped Crusader in current comics as well, while Batman is amid one of Scarecrow’s most elaborate attacks so far. The current Batman: Fear State event by James Tynion IV, Jorge Jimenez, and Riccardo Federici, has Gotham in fear yet again. Even though it’s more likely than not that Batman will defeat Dr. Jonathan Crane in the end, Gotham is about to go through some terrifying events.

It seems every October brings fans more Batman-related activities. Not only is Scarecrow back in the comics, but The Long Halloween just had its first animated movie adaptation. From re-reading The Long Halloween to following Chris Samnee‘s Batober event, it’s clear that Batman will have plenty to do this year before October 31st.
