Warning: Spoilers for Superman: Son of Kal-El 2021 Annual!

Ever since the original Superman, Clark Kent, left Earth for places unknown, his son, Jon Kent, has taken up his father’s legacy, but if he’s to further continue in Clark’s heroic footsteps, Batman will have to take the matter up with Jon’s mom, the intrepid reporter, Lois Lane, first. Joining the Justice League might seem like a no-brainer for Jon since he’s now officially the world’s new Superman, but Lois has some thoughts on the idea that don’t exactly line up with The Dark Knight’s.

Getting shut down in Superman: Son of Kal-El 2021 Annual, by Tom Taylor, Steve Pugh, and Clayton Henry, Batman having plans for the new Superman is a thought that’s perfectly in line with the meticulous hero Batman is known to be. Visiting his mother during a brief respite from his hero duties, Jon Kent and Lois Lane are officially coming to terms with the fact that Clark Kent is now somewhere in the universe they can only guess at, with the worry that it might be a long while before they see him again.

Hearing a knock on their front door moments after Jon and Lois’ exchange, Batman (yes, he apparently knocks) arrives with a message for Jon from Clark himself. Needing to bring the crystal shard to Superman’s Fortress of Solitude to listen to, Jon heads off to his father’s secret base, but not before Lois makes her stance clear on Batman’s future plans for her son.

Flat out saying, “Jon’s not joining the Justice League, Bruce,” Lois partially succeeds in sussing out an ulterior motive for Batman’s sudden appearance, connecting the dots in a way that her reporter mind can only deduce. Immediately clarifying his intentions by saying, “I’m not here for that, Lois. Not yet,” Batman reveals his plans for Jon in the most off-handed way, proving Lois’ instincts true, just slightly early in their timing.

Lois not wanting nor allowing Jon to join the Justice League may be a premature thing to worry about, but one that’s inevitable nonetheless. Furthermore, with Lois no doubt knowing that it’s only a matter of time before Jon has to fill his father’s role on the team, her calling out Batman and nipping his ask in the bud may also just be Lois’ way of protecting her son from even more responsibility and hardship that he doesn’t necessarily need to face at the current moment.

So while Lois was only half right about Batman’s reason for paying her and Jon a visit, it doesn’t change the fact that her stance is clear on Jon’s potential Justice League induction. Batman may have realistic plans for the new Superman, especially in a world without Clark Kent flying around, but that doesn’t mean Lois Lane will allow them to happen — at least not with her explicit permission first.
